I am just in the beginning stages of determining what I will need in the apartment I finally rent. Can anyone offer me advice. I will be trying to run my US business from thailand and the internet and email will be important to me.
1) Is a direct line a must? Will a direct line allow me go on line and send/receive emails in thailand?
2) Will I also need one that has high speed internet access?
I have been using "internet cafes" on most of my visits but don't want to continue this once I live here. I want the convenience of a home office and the capability to send/receive emails.

Doesn't it work where you are capable of getting an "outside line" as in, dial 0 with a pause and then the ISP number in your modem string. Worked for me in Pattaya while staying at a hotel....

If you have to "go through" an operator....than you would have problems.
Cheers

As you won't need a dedicated line to access the Internet, most apartments (especially the cheap ones) allow your phone call to be 5-15 minutes. Then it cuts off. Which, of course, is very annoying.

Ideal is a dedicated line with Hi Speed (I use True 2.5mbs).

When looking for an apartment ask the following things:

(dial up)
Do they provide dedicated lines which you can rent from them?

(hi speed)
(2) Does the apartment allow you to order your own dedicated line with TOT or True?

If (2) yes, True gives you a free line (and a modem as well) if you order hi speed internet for 12 months.

Hi speed cannot be compared to dial up. If you need it depends on your requirements.

And the price: from THB 590 (256/128) per month with no extra telephone expenses. 24 hour access.

If the flat you want doesn't have high-speed internet access - get your own. Your landlord will want anywhere from 8,000 baht to 20,000 to get it installed. Worth every cent. Get a TA line - sign up for TRUE Broadband. You will have the ability to do voice & internet simultaneously & nobody but you decides what you are doing with that phone line. As above 590 baht per month flat rate for internet & 3 baht a call outgoing. I paid about 2000 to TRUE for my modem - there was some sort of promotion for UBC subscribers which of course I am. Your long distance bill will show up every 2 weeks - landlord may want a deposit on that too.

Many better apartments offer high speed at no extra cost simply because it's expected - whether wired or wireless.

Bad advice (again) from 'short dick' man.

Try to get an apartment where you are allowed to have True install your own line (as said free if you sign up for 12 months Internet).

The normal price for a telephone installation is THB 3,500 baht so why would you pay 8,000-20,000 baht?

I live in an apartment where they allow you to contact True yourself and have them install. Less than a week...

And another for the BTF fool posting below:

A passport for foreigners will do. No need for a Thai ID card. I already ordered 2 lines succesfully.
