I have this this ulocked Erickson R520m, it is tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900. I know it is unlocked because I can put T-mobile, AT&T sim and both work in the USA. It is tri-band, because I can even manually set the band, or set it to auto.
When I was in BKK last Dec, I went to MBK and tried to buy a sim. Many vendors in MBK tried all the available sims (Orange, dtak, or what ever) but for every sim, the phone only gives "Emergency Call Only". They could not tell me why it is not working with their sim, though they confirmed that it is not locked. Due to language issues, I could not get a clear picture of what is going on.
Any Tech savy brother tells me what is going on? I know this one is going to E-bay.
I like to get a tri-band, unlocked phone next time I go to BKK. I am planning to switch to T-Mobile (form my current Verizon plan). That way I will have to carry only one phone (not two: one GSM and CDMA). I know I can buy one in MBK, but I would prefer to buy one in the USA (with proper Wrranty, etc.) that will work in every corner of the World.
Please tell me which tri-band brand (and model number) is good for every where. I know I have to get an unlocked phone and that is no a problem.

I have used the exact same model with AIS 1-2-Call SIMs a couple of times in Thailand. Never had a problem. Will be back in March to see if things have changed, but I doubt it.
Maybe you got a lemon. One thing is clear: your phone can operate on the right frequency because it finds the network. The fact that it limits you to SOS calls only means that it cannot authenticate the SIM. Did you also try 1-2-Call?
