I remember seeing a sign by a booth at the BKK airport that says mobile phone for rent. I think the booth is after the money exchange booths, on the way to the men's room. I don't know what the prices are though. May be one of the brothers could check it out when he is in BKK next time.

so may other posts on tis in this forum! anyway you can buy a sim card for about thb 600, that gives you your own phone number and about thb 300 airtime credit. mind you that does only work when you have a non-american phone or a newer one dual band or even better trial band mobile. in case you do not have one you can buy an entire set in thailand including sim, airtime credit of about thb 2,000 and a brandnew mobile phone for about thb 4,000 (usd 100!). so would be foolish renting a phone!

I guess American cell phone companies has screwed up my brain in trying to understand the whole sim card thing. I am wondering if I purchase a used Cell phone in Thailand and then get a sim card for it with a new number, does that make it locked or is it unlocked?? I would like to be able to use my cell phone in other parts of the world also, can I just buy a new sim card and use the same phone anywhere, or do I now need to get it unlocked? Will the sim card I buy in Thailand work in lets say Mexico or Europe? If I can use the same sim card will it use my minutes faster since I am not in that country. Please help me, blood is running from my ears trying to understand all of this. Doug

Just from personal exp... Last time when I was in BKK, I sat on my phone, and had to get one in a hurry. So my secretary/translator took me to this place called Fortune city, 2nd FL, and I bought a new phone (Nokia6610 $250) used my company credit card. She used her ID and stuff to set up an account for me. I had her ask the sales lady specifically about whether or not the phone is unlock, and it is. It has asian lang. But the language can be set to switch to the local lang. automatically. (inc. english) I bought a DTAC sim card to use for my various "un-approved" activities. To answer your 2 questions... 1. The phone itself has to be unlock, different sim card made no difference. I had phones from Thailand, China, U.K. and Taiwan, I have no problem using them with my T-mobile sim card. Just make sure you have a tr-band phone. (united states uses 1900) 2. I tried to use pre-paid Dtac sim card in united states, venezuela, london but no go. But the Thai sim card that came with the monthly account is ok. Local sim is ok. I prefer to use my T-mobile sim card, since my company paid for it. BTW... MBK had better price, I got mine at Fortune city because I didn't have to paid for it.

Is there any such thing as a Tri-band that will take multiple sims at the same time?
