I recently bought a Motorola V551 and followed up with a G4 laptop. Everything is pretty much OK except that I have been told that Motorola does nots support Apple and therefore there is no way that I can download anything (video or photos) from the phone to the G4. Anyone have any suggestion. (I would have bought the Mac anyway but I would have bought a different phone had I known about this problem. ) Thanks for any advice.

Mmm... I don't know diddly about Motorola phones. But I know a thing or two about G4s [Got a love grove on with my 17" G4] Two things come to mind: Does it have Bluetooth? If so enabled you can send stuff over via that route [I bet]: Easiest route is to access it via the menubar, so do-- System Preferences> [Hardware] Bluetooth> Settings> [select] Show Bluetooth status in the Menu bar. Try this link too: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34744 [since I just did the research and discoverd your are Bluetooth enabled] Second thing is, ask the real experts [cast a bigger net] at MacNN http://forums.macnn.com/ The URL for Mac wisdom.

Thanks Skip Both the phone and Mac have Bluetooth. After I bought the Mac I took it in to the Apple store and aBKed them to show me how the phone downloads to the laptop. They tried it and several phones showed up on the screen. I asked the sales person what phones these are and he said they would be phones that belong to customers in the store. The store has WiFi connectivity. My phone would not show up. I made an appointment with their "Genius Bar" in the store and this fellow said Motorola probably doesn't support Apple. I called Cingular where I bought the phone and was told that indeed Motorola doesn't support Apple. My post is made in the hopes that maybe someone has a miracle solution. I will also post it on the http://www.geekstogo.com site. I know shit happens but I'm a little pissed off. The phone was pitched to me as having the download capability. The same was pitched to me regarding the Apple. As I said, I would still have bought the Mac but since they saw my phone (I showed it to them) I think they should have known about this problem. I did call the Cingular salesman and told him that his pitch should change to "you might be able to download this phone to your computer". I've known this for a long time but it never hurts to reinforce it "BUYER BEWARE'. Thanks again, Skip. I will check the sites you have listed.

Take your phone back to Cingular. If within 30 days, they will take it back. Replace it with a newer Nokia phone (Nokia 6620, for example). Better yet, get rid of Cingular, switch to T-mobile, and get the $19.95 unlimited internet (Cingular charges $80 for the same 'service'). As you were sold on this capability by the salesman, it is very easy for you to break any contract, as they are not providing what the salesman promised you. This happens a lot, by the way. Moto sucks, though there's hope their iTunes phone may support the Mac (but I'm not holding my breath) Lastly, there are (allegedly) ways to make your combination work - from a forum post on Macintouch.com.. The key is you need to be able to get your phone to pair with your Mac. http://www.macintouch.com/macphones05.html From Don Smith I have Cingular and a Motorola V551 phone with Bluetooth. Much frustration at first trying to get it to act as a Bluetooth modem for my PowerBook (You know those instructions on the Cingular site? I was afraid of that. Get them COMPLETELY out of your mind! They have NOTHING to do with making your phone connect!). Finally, success when I found the note that follows. The following was figured out by someone else but I found the following instructions to work for me. Now, with the cellphone on my hip, my PowerBook logs into the Internet without a problem. First, you must be on a plan that allows your cellphone to connect to the Web, you must turn Bluetooth on on your phone and PowerBook, and you must pair the phone with the PowerBook. Then... Download updated modem scripts at http://www.taniwha.org.uk Put the new script in the following folder: HD/Library/Modem Scripts (This is the Library in the root directory, not the Library in your User folder) I chose to use a new Location calling it "Cingular BT" and disabled all types of connections but BT and my cellphone (which shows up after pairing) Now you have to configure your Network settings. Go to your System Preferences/Network Choose show Bluetooth First Tab TCP/IP: Configure IPv4: Set at PPP DNS Servers: 66.209.10.201 66.209.10.202 Next tab PPP: (NOTE: UPPERCASE is REQUIRED!) Service Provider: CINGULAR Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM Password: CINGULAR1 Telephone Number: WAP.CINGULAR Then click on the PPP Options button and uncheck "Send PPP echo packets" and "Use TCP header compression", Bluetooth Modem tab: Modem: Choose Motorola GPRS CID2 in the case of the Moto V551 and some other Moto models. This may work for other models as long as you choose the right script. (If you dropped in the new modem scripts into the correct folder, you should have this in your drop down menu.) "APPLY" the settings and dial.

Great advise from Daffy Duck! Though I'm a bit surprised he didn't mention the Sony Ericcson line. They're awesome with Macs. I've got a t68i and a Z600 and they wrok flawlessly with the G4 and my.Mac account. That first link I provided is Apples own protocol to follow on pairing up devices. DD is right on the money though when he says to ditch the Motorola IMHO. Cisco- if you sign up for.mac you're synchronization in phonebook and iCal becomes seamless. Try reviewing this link from Apple: http://www.apple.com/isync/devices.html Take the Ducks' advise and give 'em hell!
