I have a tri-band GSM phone that I took to a Mobile phone shop that sold sim cards. I bought one from T-mobile for about 60USD with a couple hours talk time. Most of the phones in the USA are on CDMA networks so I had a hard time finding a carrier. But then again I was in BumF***k Texas. Good luck.
