Gents,
I could not find a thread on this and was surprised.
Lately I've heard some amusing yet instructive stories about people who got caught out by technology dealing with partners.
These can serve as a warning to many of us. I have two examples:
1. The guy who used his default email address (family email) responding to a hookers classified when arranging some fun for his friends.
2. The guy who had so much finger trouble with an SMS instructing his mate in his alibi, that he sent it to his girlfriends's cell phone.
Any other amusing disasters, or is this 'old hat' & just new to me?
Cheers,
Liam

Well I got caught out by email.

I used to have one email address I kept for home and work and another I kept for girlfriends and girls I met online. These emails I used to download on my work laptop and being lazy I never deleted them.

One year I go on holiday with my family to England and I take my laptop. I am not a complete idiot so my lap top is password protected and so is my Outlook Express.

Anyways I go out for a few beers with my brother and come back a little worse the wear. There is my wife sitting there having spent the last two hours going through my emails on my laptop. Now in marriage they usually say 'three strikes and you are out' - in this case it was about 120 strikes all in one go!!

Incidentally the problem was Windows XP which was fairly new at the time. I had found the 'hibernation' button but I hadnt realised that you could reactivate the computer and access Outlook Express without having to input the passwords.

Ahhhh well these things happen.

Very scary Abrak!

My scare story - Last weekend I was transfering Photos from an SD Card to my Hard Drive and accidently missed copying 2 in my drag & drop hurry! Deleted the Photos off the SD Card only to find the 2 were missing!

So I go looking for a Program to undelete them as I know that they a probably still there as I have not formatted the Card, only part of there file name is missing!

So I find a Shareware program that doesn't want to charge me $30+ USD! to recover them, great no problem getting the 2 missing ones back, BUT it also recovers ones I took last year that I thought would have been overwritten many times! This is very scary and too easy to do! From now on I will format every SD card once I am sure that I have what I want! Be warned!

I believe that XP has always had an "option" to force the password re-entry when coming out of hibernation.

But I think we really want to hear the rest of this story.

A format may not help if someone has the right recovery software. The best thing to do is to keep taking pictures until the card fills up and over-writes all the old space.

End of the story? Well not much to say really.

My wife gave me an ultimatum to choose between her and all the girls with whom I was having 'sordid casual sex'.

That was pretty much the last time I saw her.

Abrak, Ultimatums don't work on me either. Given two or three trips a year to LOS plus all the work to get ahead financially & workwise before I get there, plus the servitude required to the 'missus' following any trip; freedom would look pretty templting to me.
OZ, scary about the photo cards - I have always kept a separate one for 'fun' - I will now also format Thanks.
Any other technology disasters out there - forwarned is fore armed?
Liam

Good choice - the chicks simply never learn. Good on you, I'm happy that you are hopefully much happier, now...

Have you tested your theory? IE, that formatting the card prevents the program from recovering data?

Depending on the file system and the type of format used, 'formatting' sometimes just erases the File Allocation Table - the index to all the files. Similar to just deleting all the files on the storage object, but not the same.

Try running the software on the card after formatting. Can you still recover anything?

If so, you would want to find a secure formatting tool. If the card appears as a disk in Windows, simply download PGP (GPG probably does it as well) - it comes with a secure formatting tool that overwrites the space occupied by the file (or disk in entirety) several times with random information.

(this is done several times (your choice of how many) as there are tools that can recover data even after it's been overwritten (at least from hard disks) due to an effect called something like 'magnetic memory'. Or something like that).

He will find that previous data will joyfully be recovered. a 'format' is really not a removal of data, but rather simply a resetting of the file allocation table (as you rightfully pointed out).

Even this is not foolproof - I would strongly suggest incinerating the old memory card, and replacing it with a new one...

...not really, but in all seriousness...

Unless you guys are married to Olga, former KGB operative, whose boyfriend Felix works for the CIA's data recovery divisions, just a simple format is good enough -- you're not trying to protect nuclear secrets from prying counter-espionage eyes, you're just trying to not have your spouses see your naughty mementos...

Most girls are hard pressed to use email, or understand what 'format' does, that I doubt most would fire up the proper recovery tool to restore the contents of a seemingly empty memory card.

Keep it real, guys!

Dr. von Quack!
