Ok here is a tricky one for you techies.

UBC offers 3 technologies.

Analogue CATV
Digital CATV
Satellite TV

I am building a house in Bangkok with 7 TV outlets. The cheapest way to wire this up is with analogue CATV - you buy one subscription and split the single between other 'fake' boxes. The problem is, reception quality is poor and UBC will eventually phase out analogue CATV.

This leaves me 2 choices.

Satellite TV. Here I can basically buy 7 UBC boxes and say 3 subscriptions - namely smart cards. I can move the smart cards around so that any room with a UBC box is capable of receiving it. The problem is that Satellite is subject to outages in heavy weather.

Digital CATV. The cable is run underground. The set top box is digital but there is no smart card. I really dont want to buy 7 connections so what can I do. I think it is unlikely you can buy a fake digital box. With digital your ability for encryption is so much greater than analogue.

Any ideas?

How many TVs do you ever envision to be used simultaneously?

- one central CATV box.
- one video transmitter.
- 7 remote ampifiers/transceivers.
- 6 video receivers.

You can view and control channels from every room, but only fom one box.

There's multiple other choices beyond that by combining these.

Thanks Daffy,

A viable option I would think although as I am wiring my house at the moment I could actually hardwire the video transmission.

Actually I rang the boss of UBC last night and the information I was given about the digital CATV boxes was incorrect. They do in fact have a smart card - in fact I have a feeling that the box is exactly the same as the box for DSTV. So I will simply put in 7 CATV boxes and by 2 or 3 subscriptions (smart cards) and then use wherever I want.
