Hi all, Just heard a strange rumour: Apparently Taksin has plans to enforce a new law/guideline forcing customers to present ID when purchasing mobile sims or top-up/refill cards. Has anyone heard this rumour over there and do you know what the implications will be for foreign nationals wanting to buy a Thai sim? Bringing your passport with you to your local 7-11 ? DryBorg

Yes this is true and not a rumor. The thrust of it is Thai authorities want to be able to track the Muslim extremists in the South. Having ID associated with all SIMs, including prepaid (now anonymous) will allow them to monitor phone activity of all suspects and find new ones (who call known numbers linked to terrorist incidents) Really does not affect tourists except when buying the SIM. You are expected to have your passport or a copy on you all the time anyway right now.... so it is a non issue really. Cheers...

Bad idea....if you are connected to a terrorist network this is not going to stop or limit your activities/movements....every day, a piece of freedom of being and doing is lost in LOS....

A minor correction :- This "proposed" new requirement ( i.e. of showing ID before purchasing pre-paid SIM cards ) was NOT thought of in order to track communications with known Terrorists. Rather - it has been proposed so that bombs set off by Mobile Phones ( a quite regular occurrence recently ) can be traced to the person who purchased the SIM card. IMHO - this is a total waste of time and effort because the "bombers" would just resort to stealing Mobile Phones rather than purchasing SIM cards.

Terrorism is the excuse offered as it is a buzzword. There are far more criminals using mobile phones than just terrorists, and many crimes being solved because of their existance. Americans have to carry ID don't they, and they tell us that it's the land of the free. Funnily enough Thailand is the Land of the Free also. Could you buy a SIM in the USA without divulging the owner? (genuine question). Large scale terrorist organisations will get around any barrier put in place.

Although eased in the last years, having an ID was always required to buy a phone and a sim card in the early years of the phone industry in Thailand. I guess by reinstating this rule, the theft of ID cards will become even more attractive. I, for one, wouldn't like to have my name attached to a phone used to blow up the government buildings....

US citizens are NOT required to carry ID. Not sure about SIM cards in the states. Regardless, alot of work to catch some renegade Southern bombers. Criminals and terrorists do not use legal means anyway so this amounts to no help except to AIS for database in the future. Waste of time and resources for political and future economic gain, not to mention further erosure of individual rights.
