right then, I've seen these power supplies for powering/charging ones laptop from the cigarette lighter in ones car... They also claim to be suitable for use on aeroplanes.. My question is: has anyone had any experience with these? which carriers provide suitable power outlets? is this a business class only deal? I'm travelling to LOS in July with Emirates (cattle class) and if I could use my laptop throughout the flight then that would be just dandy! cheers Chris.

Use them most of the time, most Airlines only have them in First/Business Class. I believe Singapore Airlines has them in their Airbus (A340-500) in Economy for there Singapore USA non-stop flights!

You need to make sure that the PLANE the carrier uses supports it. Older planes do not. More recent planes do (I'm talking in coach - business class almost all planes do). The new Boeing 747-400F supports it in the first rows, to row #46 on China Airlines - and it's a regular AC plaug. JAL, Cathay or other support one of two standard connectors between the seats. Works well. Check with your airline, and talk until you find someone that knows, or do you own research via Google (that's how I found out about the 747-400F deal).

Also you need to check the type of connection needed. United has the specialized connection that requires a specialized plug. Singapore Airlines has a standard US type three prong connection. (it is great because you can use your power cord) Be sure to remove your battery after plugging in. These devices are not appropriate for charging batteries and will fry them if left conencted too long.
