Last I checked, several months back, people were getting arrested for offering or using VoIP commercially. In the meantime, a google search yields providers that appear to be offering commercial VoIP in Thailand.

I guess it might have something to do with the Prime Minister owning some sort of telecommunications monopoly, and that VoIP would kinda undermine that -- in the meantime, it appears that some carriers appear to be offering it - hence my question if the status had changed.

VoIP is that the same Ip telephone? in that case you can use VoIP from another country as well! I have a small adapter that I can take along if I travel and just conect to a network somewhere in the world!
But to have an easy/closer contact with the sales company offcourse domestic wood be better!

Personally, I have no experience with VoIP.
However, as you said Daffy, there are plenty of providers of hardware in Thailand, so I guess it's more or less accepted.
But knowing that bandwidth in Thailand is limited, I wonder if the QoS is acceptable....

We use it to very good effect in my office. It's saving a fortune and - so far as I know - the quality is excellent.
Couldn't tell you more than that, though, Im sorry. Have no idea who the vendor is or what systems we're running. We're starting to use it in every office around the world.
Could possibly ask the IT guys here if you gave me some specific questions.

I use Skype, a UK provider. When I call to another Skype user it is free, when I call a landline it is 0.017 EUR per min.
They also have Chat and real-time file transfer capabilities.

I have had no trouble using this in any country that I have travelled in so far...

While I am aware that I can use a multitude of other VoIP services, I am interested in one that can provide me with a Thai phone number, as well as Thai calling plans.
With every other provider, calling Thai numbers has charges.
I am very satisfied with Vonage, and am now adding Broadvoice (as they provide unlimited WORLD callings for $25/mo - except to Thailand), and will be using my WiFi phone on my next trip.

Using VoIP, I can call thailand mobile phone for only $0.08 (8c) per min from USA.
It's cheaper than Skype or any calling cards.
Calling cards usually carry alot of hidden fee.
