I am considering buying another laptop (currently have a very old, slow and heavy one) and would like some feedback from members on makes/models they like. Most interested in knowing features they really like and why and what they see as problems. My use would be for emails, word processing, photo storage, etc.. Hoping to learn enough this time to make an informed decision. I have gone online and checked a few rating sites and that helped but still want member feedback because I will use it considerably when traveling to LOS. Thanks

I have been using IBM Think Pads for a few years now and currently have 6 in my Office (they have become our standard!). If you have the money get the T Series, they are not the "sexiest" but they have proved to be very reliable and longest lasting, have good screens and very good Battry life plus most models come with 1 Year International Warranty and 3 year local Warranty plus we get 6 Months free insurance with ours!

I bought a non-branded model 3 years ago but now I'm also looking to get a new (branded) one but then again I ask myself, why bother?

The one I have has a genuine P4 (1.8Ghz) with time management, 30Gb HD, 256Mb on board, WiFi, switchable Combo drive, 14" screen, 3 USB ports, serial and parallel ports, PCMCIA double slot, touch pad, LAN port, GForce graphics with separate memory, twin sterio speakers, 56k modem, ear/microphone/inline jacks, TV out, Infra Red, Fire Wire, etc, etc., ad nauseum....!

I use mine for much the same purposes as you, so it looks like mine has (more than) everything I need so why am I considering a later (branded) model, f***ed if I know!

Although you don't say what the spec is on the model you have I'd check again on whether the one you have is fit for your purposes. Apart from being heavy n' slow are these good enough reasons to shell out the cash and get another one?

If the old one does the job then don't bother upgrading yet, wait until you have a need for additional features as opposed to just wanting the latest (lightest) model.

I think I just wrote a post to myself!

Cheerio
PS: I s'pose there are some people who just want to have the latest electronic equipment and others try to find purposes for the additional features AFTER they get 'em!

Bought a T40p from IBM last year and I am very happy with it. A little bit expensive but itīs worth it. Never had any problems. Good support through their website too. The only disadvantage is their DVD recorder, cause it can only write DVD-. The only problem with the T serie is that all additional items are quite expensive. Wanted to buy a CD recorder but here in Germany itīs so expensive that I ordered one from the States.
Because IBM sold their brand to Lenovo I am not sure if anything changed in quality, but I canīt imagine that they will mess around with such a reliable brand like IBM.

I use a PowerBook - a Macintosh laptop from Apple.

It simply works. Flawlessly. Oh, and I have to deal with ZERO virus', spyware, or malware issues. That latest big virus scare? Didn't even phase me.

Powerbooks start at around $1,600 for the 15" widescreen ones.

On the lower budgets, you can pick up a white iBook, starting at around $800.

On either of them, budget to add another 1gigabyte of RAM for around $120. You may also make sure to either buy them with, or add on, Airport (wireless), and Bluetooth (and then make sure you have a Bluetooth capable mobile phone). Airport you can add later. Bluetooth you should make sure that you buy the machine with it built-in.

That's the last thing you'll ever need to worry about.

== B's Bad Experience with Refurb's ==

I bought my current laptop about a 1.5yrs ago. At the suggestion of a co-worker, I checked out Dell's refurbished computer site in order to "save a couple baht". ~Stooooo-pid~ Long story short, the system had video card issues the day I got it and it took a good 3-4 months of working with the ignorant idiot bastards at Dell Support to get it resolved. System has worked great since I got the video issue resolved, no complaints. And for all that headache, I ended up only saving about 12,000 baht. Never again...

Cheers,

Dell's support is appalling, almost as bad as the now defunct Tiny (Tough Its Now Yours) in the UK.

I'm looking at getting a new laptop myself at the moment and have narrowed it down to either the Sony S series or the T series. I've just got to decide between power (S) and portability (T) now.

I bought a Sony Vagio (not sure what model) about three months ago. It is lighter and much faster than the old Think Pad I hauled around the word....very useful in the air where I was usng it going across the Pacific pond yesterday on Cathy Pacific.

I showed my new machine the the head IT chap at a friend's company and he gave it a big thumbs up for speed and screen brightness.
