Looks like Apple Thailand is ramping up their iPod campaign there as well - though the iPod has successfully penetrated that market as well.

Who's all got an iPod, and which one do you have? What do you think of it?

I bought my daughter a 20 gig about a year ago. We bought it at Best Buy and took the extended warranty and it went belly up last month. They exchanged it for the new color model at no charge. My daughter likes it. Sounds good with Sony headphones. An expensive buy for LOS. I wonder if this will replace the 'sick buffalo' sob story?

Bought the standard 20GB IPod in HK just before the colour one came out (shit!). Loaded about 600 songs and still got room for 4,000 more. With the Bose speakers, the sound is awesome. The best bit of kit I've ever bought. Only criticism is the battery life when on the move. 15 hours my arse. I am lucky if I get 5.

You're right BigD. Every TG I've brought back wants one. It may replace the mobile phone upgrade in due course.

I bought a 40gig one had it two months and it rained on a hikeone day and some water got in the iPod. They wouldn't repair it, (in Hong Kong) saying it wasnlt covered in the warranty. After cooling down I got a 30gig and now have 3500 songs stored. Great for taking on holidays and not having to lug CDs for the walkman. I bought the Bose speakers as well and sound is brilliant. Friends tell me to bring it to their barbecues, and it becomes the background music. They also have cordless headphones and an attachment so you can play in the car through the FM radio frequency. There's a few alarm bells sounding because the iPods can crank out music levels of 100 decibels and some kids are complaining of tinnitus

I just bought an ipod nano 4gb and I really like it. I had a ipod mini before and it was pretty good too but the nano is just a damn good player. You really can't beat having 4 gigs of flash memory for around $250. I'm thinking about buying a 2gb player as a gift but haven't decided on that yet.

Don't have an IPod yet. I'm waiting for the Sirius S50 MP3 player/Satellite Radio to come out. It will pick up the Sirius satellite radio feed (a must for die hard Howard Stern fans like myself) plus MP3/WMA playability.

I've got a 40gb model that I picked up in NYC a little under 2 years ago as it was a damn side cheaper there than in the UK at the time.
For the first 18 months or so I thought it was the greatest thing ever, took it everywhere with me and my only complaint was I'd run out of memory and only got about 2/3rds of my CD collection on it.
A couple of months ago I started having problems with it. At first I thought it was just the battery not holding its charge as the damn thing just started cutting out all the time, but even after charging it all night and with the battery indicator still showing a full charge the thing just dies.
I contacted my local apple shop and their response was that 2 years is the max lifespan anyway and to buy another. Contacting Apple Europe wasn't much better, although they did offer to swap my iPod for a refurbished model at a charge of £110 including shipping (about a third of what I originally paid).
At the moment I'm undecided whether to take them up on their offer or just buy a different mp3 player, but if I go with the latter option it certainly won't be an apple next time.

2GB nano. Didn't have the patience to look for the 4GB version, oh well, 2g's will have to do. Really like it... it looks cool as hell and small enough to fit in the small (coin?) pocket of a pair of diesels.

has anyone seen any accessories for the nano in BKK yet? please let me know if you see any.. I need a carrying case (either around the neck or around the arm) for the gym.. the display on mine is a bit scratched up since I've just had it in my pocket (not with keys or coins or anything, but it's gotten scratched anyway) for the past few weeks.

a) You need to properly condition the battery right after purchase, to prime it. Almost NO ONE ever does this, and the result is bad battery life. Essentially, when the instructions say to charge the iPod the first time for 12 hours, there's a reason.

b) If your battery life is now impaired, you can re-condition the battery -- you need to FULLY discharge the battery, then plug it in, and leave it plugged in continuously for 12 hours. Then, discharge FULLY in one sitting, again. Repeat three times. You should see your battery life dramatically improve. You must repeat this cycle once every couple of months, to keep the battery in top shape.

c) If your battery is hosed (a possibility), you can now pick up third party batteries for around $30 USD, which will provide you a dramatically longer battery life (as they are newer technology). Replacing them yourself is about a 20 minute operation on most iPods, and you can see yourself getting around 12-20 hours. I have a 1st generation iPod that now gets roughly 20 hours (i replaced the battery to see how the new battery works, even though the old battery was still giving me 8 hours). All my other iPods are still giving me between 10-15 hours (20gb b&w, 60gb color), without fail. The iPod shuffle gives me roughly 15 hours as well.

Get yourself one of various environment protection covers, usually made of wrap-around silicon. These things are great, and really protect your pod. Won't survive getting submerged, but certainly keeps splashes away.

Chck my advice about replacing the battery, above - apart from that, one other suggestion is to get AppleCare with your iPod. At $59 it extends your warranty to three years total, at which point EVERYTHING is covered, and repair involves going to an Apple Centre, and walking out with a swapped iPod. Well worth the $59 Apple charges for this. You can add AppleCare to any iPod within the first year (or, as long as it is still under the original warranty).

Thanks Daffy. I will do as you suggest and see what happens, cause it is really pissing me off and spoiling an otherwise excellent purchase. I did follow the instructions in the very beginning but I may well have f***ed up somewhere along the line. I'll let you know.
