After seeking advice on the best place to pick up a sim card in BKK on this forum I decided to go to MBK shopping centre.
Went to one of the many vender's there. Was sold a "New Gen" GSM Advance sim card made by AIS.
Well firstly we have to register the sim with passport number etc. That surprised me as most of the info on this site suggest this procedure would not be in place until the new year. Anyway the card cost 350 baht which included 50 baht airtime. I asked to recharge another 300 baht which should have given me another months airtime right...wrong. At first the girl who couldn't speak much English tried to sell 500 baht card. I said no only 300 baht. Found out after the reason was that this card only gives you 7 days airtime for 300 baht. Not happy but what could I do. Walked away and used the sim for the next week.
On the last day of airtime I was in Pattaya so went to the Big C tech centre and asked for a recharge. Only one week left of the trip so asked for 300 baht. Phone credited the 300 baht but no extra airtime!!. Yes the expire date was still set for that day. The girl at this counter was very helpful and put me in contact with AIS call centre. I explained the problem. They assured me they would look into the problem and would phone me back.....Yeah right, no call and the card expired that night!.
Ended up going back the next day to Big C and purchasing a 1 2 call starter kit with a 50 baht credit. purchased another 300baht recharge that gave me an expiry date of 13st Dec.
I could but this down to just a one off but my travel buddy who purchased the new gen sim at the same time experience exactly the same problems.
Can anyone explain the reason for this!
I would suggest any new arrivals avoid this sim card.

Been in place for months, the ability to register that is, I registered mt SIM cards 4 months ago

I didn't say you have to....i said the ability to register has been in place for a while.
They don't care whether you register them or not, but they will cut you off if you don't by a certain date.
Unless they change their minds again next week

Cut off date is/was 31 December. I registered mine in WTC last week my Mia filled in the form and added her ID number. She registered her 1-2-call at the same time so it looks as tho you can register several.

Hey, shouldn't that be' Dumb Dude'?
The name GMS Advance points to their post paid monthly packages.
You simply can't top up as you do with a 1-2 Call Card. You can kind of top up though but only to pay for your charges.
The minimum to monthly fee is THB 500, that's why the girl tried to sell you this package.
That was the reason why you had to register.

Coming from Australia I am not really up on the latest Thai brands. I just asked for a pre-paid sim card. No need for it to get complicated.

How the hell could you know that? Simply by getting the info on the web and particularly from BTF.
Prepaid simcards have been covered extensively in the 'Tech' section.... over and over and over and over again!
Even after getting advice there, you still ended up with the wrong sim card.....

We are only talking about a sim card here not a bloody BMW.
If I reseached every thing I intended to buy overseas I would spend most of my free time on the internet........come to think of it.......
Seriously though I asked for a basic pre-paid sim, no more than that.
Further to that I did do reseach but I guess I am just a stupid newbie!
Just trying to share the experience so other stupid newbies don't make the same mistake.
