OK guys-forgive me for my ignorance, but I have seen references to SMS'ing another. Am I to assume that this is the same as what I would call a text message? Given the different operating systems of cell phones between US and Thailand, can you SMS across that technology gap? Is SMS expensive? My text messages on the cell in the US cost me 5 cents. Thanks for any enlightenment that may be able to provide.

I know that T-Mobile at least has a GSM network. ÝNot sure how well SMS to Thailand work or the costs involved. AT&T and Sprint: definitely not GSM. Verizon: not sure.

Verizon does not offer SMS. Infact, Verizon does not even have SIM technology in their phones. If it was not for their great converage, I would've switched to AT&T / MLife. You can use ICQ to send and receive SMS messages to and from Thailand.

Actually AT&T's M-Life services ARE GSM, and SMS is part of the service. ÝI understand, however, that they only offer GSM in some markets, for now. I use Cingular, and can send SMS to Thailand (AIS), although I'm having a hard time figuring out which systems work and which don't. ÝI just sent one to a 07 number...seems to have worked. haam sup

Forgot about Cingular. ÝUnfortunately, both T-Mobile and Cingular have pretty small footprints in the US compared to the big three: AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. Wasn't aware that AT&T had their GSM network coming on line already. ÝGood to hear that the end of TDMA is closer. ÝMe, I'm a cheerleader for CDMA. ÝRah, rah!

Unfortunately the coverage with Mlife/AT&T GSM sucks in California!! But, I wish Veriaon would switch to GSM technology, but it does not look like that is going to happen any time soon!!

About GSM vs. CDMA: CDMA got a black eye due to its rollout on the cheap here in California. ÝI have a Pioneer Account with Sprint (no monthly service charge, per minute only) as an early adopter. ÝTheir coverage was, and mostly still is, terrible in Southern California. ÝSprint got it up in a hurry, used Cox Cable to administer and advertise it, and has NEVER had decent customer service or adeqate coverage. ÝThey DO, however, have a big advertising budget. Verizon, also CDMA, has the best coverage by far, but lags behind in 'bells and whistles'. I switched to Cingular and GSM because I wanted one phone to use here and in Thailand. ÝOn balance, it seems like a good compromise, but Cingular isn't doing much to promote the advanced features. ÝOn the other hand, their coverage (which T-Mobile shares: same towers and infrastructure, leased from Cingular) has improved a LOT in the past 6 months. Qualcomm, of course, would like the world to switch to CDMA, but it seems a lot like the old VHS/BetaMax VCR wars: the world already has decent GSM, and doesn't appreciate the technical superiority of CDMA, especially since the advantages largely accrue to the cellular operators, and are transparent to the end user. BTW, GSM is still TDMA. haam sup

From what I understand, the telecos are having a lot of trouble getting the 3G networks to work well. CDMA2000 may be the way for Qualcomm's hobby horse to get back in the race.
