In The Nation today is news of a new SIM from DTAC that l think a lot of members will find useful.

DTAC promotion makes minutes last longer

Total Access Communication (DTAC) has introduced a new prepaid call package featuring a one-year validity period, in response to the impending telecom rules issued by the national telecom regulator.

Under the promotion, DTAC is offering a new SIM card called "Simple" for Bt199. It features a flat rate of Bt2 per minute and gives subscribers up to a year to use the time they purchase.

Usually, prepaid refill cards are valid from a few days to three months, depending on the promotion.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has finished drafting regulations governing standard telecom service contracts. One clause bans telecom operators from setting fixed validity periods for all prepaid telecom services. This is to prevent telecom companies from urging subscribers to quickly use up the minutes they purchase before their prepaid cards expire.

Some telecom operators have said the NTC's measure would encourage subscribers to be active call takers, instead of callers, which could hurt their profits.

Thana Thienachariya, DTAC's chief commercial officer, said that the new package would generate Bt200 to Bt300 in average revenue per user per month and attract 1 million new subscribers.

DTAC, the country's second-largest cellular operator, has around 10 million customers and expects 2 million new subscribers this year.

Won't do you much good without a re-fill card:

"2.3 Online refills
2.3.1 Web services users can make the refill with the card number and card code from an unused refill card only."

(Bangkok Post via NewsEdge) Thailand's third-ranked mobile operator True Move has mounted a strong defense against DTAC's promotional push into the prepaid customer market, by announcing it will allow customers to receive calls for two years without any top-up refill requirement.

Earlier, second-ranked DTAC had introduced a plan allowing prepaid users to receive calls for one year for a top-up refill of 20 baht ($0.5) or more.

Suphakit Vuntanadit, marketing director of True, said the company's campaign was intended primarily to pave the way for the new interconnection regime, by enticing customers to make calls within the True network.

Interconnection rates, which are set to take effect by the end of this year following negotiations, are the fees operators charge each other for handling calls across different networks.

The three major mobile operators in the country, AIS, DTAC and True Move, have tentatively agreed on a charge for outgoing calls of 1.07 baht ($0.02) a minute, including VAT.

With the new promotional package, good until August 15, True Move customers need to buy a new SIM card for 99 baht ($2.6) and will get free 50 baht ($1) worth of calling credits.

They will be allowed to receive calls for two years with no top-up refill requirement when they make a call at least one minute every 90 days.
