Yurune is right, best to contact the provider. I have DTAC, and here are the rules as I understand it: If your SIM "expires" (that means, it is past the date that they SMS you when you topup), you can no longer make calls but you can receive calls. You then have 45 days to topup, at which time you can use your SIM as normal. I understand that for 50bt or so you can change to a plan where your DTAC SIM won't expire for a year. Will have to check this out in October.

RIT 50 Baht per month and your number is good forever or for as long as you have 50 Baht per month in your account. I just make sure I have enough every time I leave.

AIS has a new SIM card called the Sawasdee Thua Thai prepaid SIM card. It is in a bright red package. Cost is 50 baht and if you add 50 baht top up to it before August 15, the credit and SIM will not expire for one year. No calling or top-up requirements in that one year time, no monthly fees. I was told you cannot take an existing 1-2-call number and use this promotion, you have to buy a new "Sawasdee Thua Thai" SIM card. Might be worthwhile for someone who is an occasional visitor.

I was just doing some research on this subject today. DTAC / Happy have just changed their policy this August for most of their "pre-pay" plans. Basically you have a 45 & 45 day limit, first 45 you can use your phone as usual, if no top ups then on day "46" it goes into a suspended mode where you can receive SMS & Calls but not make them. On the last day of the second 45 (90 days from your last top up) is the last time to top it up. After this, the SIM is expired and you must get a new SIM. So with my schedule of coming to LOS being a bit erratic I checked out the “flat rate” Simple plan as mentioned above. It guarantees me 1 year every time I top up. So this may be a good option for those needing a long “dormant” period. Then you can roll back into town, and start calling your Giks as soon as you are wheels down.

I bought the Simple plan from DTAC where it is, apparently, possible to top-up via the Internet. However, I did not register with the website before leaving LOS and find that they send the registration password via SMS, which I cannot receive here in the UK (AFAIK). So I'm stuck and hoping that the 1-year rule will apply, guess I'll find out in December. If it goes pear-shaped and expires, it's only 199THB and I haven't given the number to anyone yet as it's 'experimental'.
