For those who don't already know about this: When you are away and your TG e-mails you and you want to know if she really is up-country or down in BKK or Pattaya you can trace where she e-mailed from. My ex-TG always said she was home in Kalasin when I phoned her.
I traced her e-mails to Pattaya and Phuket (no doubt went for a beach holiday with her office girlfriends, right?). As I said, she is now my ex-TG.

Maybe she travels fast?

VisualRoute identifies where IP addresses are located.

Don't jump to conclusions too fast. Her IP might be located at the Pattaya or Phuket node. Maybe she didn't use the local node upcountry.

Interesting. Can you provide more info. Some e-mails were identified as Chonburi and "Phuket node"...I assumed it meant that was the point of origin. If she was in Kalasin why would it say Phuket?

NM, actully I did these traces after she had split on me for 3 weeks with her phone turned to "call-back service". She split the day after she took a falang phone call in our room which was 2 days after I had returned after 4 months. When she didn't come back after the first 10 days I got the message, gave up the apartment and split to pattaya for R&R. I spoke to her a month later and she had come back to the apt. to find I was gone. Bottom line I didn't trust/believe her and if you don't then there's nothing to go forward on.
Did like her looks though and she never asked me for a penny. TiT
cheers,SC

How to do this:

First you need to see the full message headers of the email message. It doesn't matter whether you're using an email client like Outlook or Eudora or a webmail service like Hotmail or Yahoo!Mail, the full headers are almost always available. You just need to find the appropriate setting and enable it.

As always with Microsoft, there's another hoop to jump through if using Outlook Express -- you need to open the relevant message, then choose File > Properties.

What you're looking for in Yahoo!Mail is the line marked "X-Originating-IP:"

In any email system you'll see a chain of headers something like:

Received: from some.mailserver.com (some.mailserver.com [36.24.36.105]) by another.mailserver.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id J7yu63rWE456 for <recipient@somehost.com>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 09:38:19 -0600
Received: from nova (dialup2-20.samart.co.th [203.149.2.20]) some.mailserver.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id J7yu63rWEc3Q for <recipient@somehost.com>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 09:38:15 -0600

What you're looking for is the end of the chain which is NOT you. It will be the one with the oldest time-stamp (remember to account for local time zones.)

In the above example "dialup2-20.samart.co.th" should resolve to Koh Samui.

What it means is a little harder to figure sometimes. These sorts of traces are not foolproof. If, for example, somebody is usuing an anonymous proxy server to send webmail, they may be sending from Birmingham but the proxy could identify as being in Botswana.

Similarly if someone is traveling with a laptop and dials up without changing the local access number, they could seem to be sending from Bangkok but actually be in Chonburi, paying long distance rates for the call.

These considerations wouldn't apply to someone using an internet cafe. A lot of upcountry net-cafes still use dial-up conections and use a local network in the shop to cram 4 or 6 users onto a single modem. Even if the shop has some variety of DSL, the connection goes first to the local point of presence -- the office where the ISP has their first layer of equipment (modems, routers, etc.) to receive connections from customers and then relay out to another node.

In short, this sort of trace can be highly accurate, but only if you know the nature of the user. A newbie in a netcafe is much easier to pin-point than an experienced user with a laptop.

VJ (I am VictoriaJohn, VJ also), I had used the last header as you described. I have other e-mail from a friend in Ptya and Bingo! the same X-origin sequence. Anyway, no mystery.
Cheers
