I have been searching on the net to no avail. Does anyone know of any mobile phone that allows me to type SMS in several languages, specifically, English, Thai, Chinese, Russian and Arabic. I just hate to have to carry 3-4 mobile phones just to do the job. I found some company that actually creates the software for muli-lingual input, eZiText (zicorp.com), but can't find any specific mobile phones that use that software, so that I can get one to test out. Interestingly the mobile phone has the capability to display the characters, I used Skype's SMS feature, and I could send myself text in English, Thai, Chinese and Russian in the same message. This could be a useful feature to teach a Russian girl some Thai or a Chinese girl Russian, whatever!

granted that you won't find hardware sporting multi characters keypad especially on mobile phones where space is at premium. You're lucky to get dual language keypads such as En-Thai but four different languages.... forget it.

The best bet is, as you have discovered, to use a 3rd party software to recreate on your smart-phone / PDA a virtual keyboard with assigned characters. I guess that any PDA-cum-Phone like Sony-Ericsson P990i, with its large-ish touch screen should do the job with the aid of a stylus.

The next question is do you actually speak and write all the languages you mentioned above? Hard to believe.... do you also want a translation software to go with the virtual keyboard (kinda Altavista's Babelfish for mobiles) ? Harder still...... maybe you should write a number of stock phrases in the 4 languages, text them to your phone using Skype and have them saved as template. Not as neat as having a translations software but it'll do the job. Problem is when the recipient replies in Mandarin / Cyrillic / Thai etc....

English & Thai no worries. Russian and Chinese I am still learning, I still have my other mobile that does Russian text input. My Sony Ericsson K750i, does 3 languages (English, Thai, Chinese) already. Some time ago I saw this Uzbek girl with a Nokia N70 or N90 with Russian and Arabic text.

I don't want to have to rely on translators, it will take a year or two, but I will get there. Yeah, I'd love to text these girls, and there are lots of uzbeks and russians here to practice with.

My understanding is that most phones can do any available language, it's simply a matter of the language packs installed on the phone.

My Motorola V3i came pre-installed with Malay, Simplified Chinese and English. But I'm sure I could have Thai added to the list if I went to the right place.

So what's the right place? Probably the service center for the manufacturer of the phone in question. Nokia, Moto, etc. Or MBK.

They may initially balk at having to track down the less commonly used language packs, but I don't see why they couldn't.

TJ, I don't think it is a matter of adding a language module, rather you change the whole menu system. If you chose the Thai version, you would lose the Simplified Chinese. I bought a 2nd-hand Nokia from MBK which initially had Thai-English, and had it reprogrammed (for 500 B) with the Eastern European menu, and now it has no more Thai input capabilities, though it can still display it if someone sent me a Thai message.

bkkz,

I used to use a Motorola Razor and I got into modding the phone. There were quite a few things you could do with that old razor if you put the time and effort into modding it. One of the things you could do was add custom language packs. Sometimes people would go online to the forums and ask for a custom language pack to be made and someone would make it for them. I never learned how to make the language packs myself but it was easy to download what was out there and apply it myself. I'm sure those old razors must be cheap by now and there's probably some modding you can do to the newer phones.

I'm not sure if any of the guys at MBK delve that deeply into modding the phones but I've never had problems finding someone there to modify my US phone to have Thai language.

Here's a link to a bunch of language packs for the Razor if you want to see what I am talking about. Linky
