I tried to read a BG's bar code... it failed... It said 'I am available for... and then a lot of garbage....'
There's a thread on thai visa with posters owning N95. It might get you the right answers.

Mine cost Bt30k, couple of grand more if you want Bluetooth with it.
Thanks for the links to the instructions. Actually I have read the instruction but still can not get it to work.
Perhaps it does not work on Thai bar codes. Or maybe I am stupid!

In that link is also downloads for software for the Nokia N95
maybe you could try some of those
the barcodes should be all numbers, the width of the line tells what numeral it represents
how does it scan them ?, with infrared I am supposing
I've only looked at a N95 once and not in great detail
