My usual preface..........I am a "way non techie" as my daughter says.

Looking to purchase a new laptop (last one was a Compaq in the US in 2000). Brand and model ideas? Not a gamer mostly internet and maybe movies......

Already many posts about Mac and others but my real questions involve wireless options.

I may want to use in places unlikely to have wireless "hotspots" and I want to know more about ways to stay online with things such as AIR CARDS, EDGE and other such options as via my mobile etc.

I dont have a clue what is best or actually works. Given that it will be in Thailand in non wireless areas is this possible? and also any advice is welcome. Thanks.

So as to avoid the wrath of some I am asking about in Thailand so it is relevant...ok Doc? And Skip.....your thoughts are especially welcome...........

As you are going to use it in Thailand, I guess it will be OK to post in here.

The good doctor has no objections. Just be a good lad... Jack.

Now hit the road....

I use my Nokia phone as a GPRS/EDGE modem when travelling - it takes about 1 minute to set up the Mac to pair and recognize it as such. Then, wherever you are, the Mac will first look for a wired connection, the not finding one, will seek a wireless airport connection, then not finding one, will look for a bluetooth connection. It all happens automagically, and GPRS/EDGE speeds in LOS are quite adequate.

Like I tell everyone who asks, first thing is to decide your budget and then work from there on the brand/model. If you are not doing anything serious on this, you can easily spend <30000 baht and get a machine that is fine. If you are feeling a little flush with cash, then you can work up in quality and features. But start with $ and then move on to requirements.

Locally I like the Asus and some of the Lenovo (IBM).

As for wireless coverage...there are many options for GPRS/EDGE services outside of BKK. The first thing you should do is go to the AIS and DTAC websites and look at their coverage maps. Do they cover where you will be spending most of your time? These 2 carriers provide the largest coverage in Thailand.

There is always the reliable (albeit slow) dial up service that you can get almost anywere as a last resort.

In connection with wireless and Mac’s this story appeared in the

The follow up to this article will be posted tomorrow.

MacBook ExpressCard Modem:
What solutions have others found for wireless Internet access when WiFi is not an option using the AirPort? What is available for MacBook Pro that uses the Express Card?

I am not interested in what works only in Bangkok as much as what works well in other areas outside of Bangkok when traveling within Thailand.

Daffy who provides your GPRS/EDGE network coverage in Thailand, is it DTAC?

JuminJack:
My friend picked up an Acer at Frys in the US, about $1100. He only uses it for internet; and when traveling within Thailand he uses a Sony Ericsson GC83 edge/GPRS PC Card. It works very well from what I have seen; although very slow.

...has more information. Still, I don't consider the express card to be an ideal solution, as it's just an extra card to lug around. Who needs an expresscard modem, as long as you have a Nokia phone w/Bluetooth.

1-2-call/AIS -- if extensive coverage is what you need, AIS/1-2-call is your provider. I had wireless access via my Nokia N73 with very decent speeds, on the beach on Koh Chang. DTAC allegedly is faster, but less coverage. I'll pick up a DTAC card next trip and give DTAC a whirl, just to have empiricals, though....

I just picked up and configured a MacBook for a client, and it cost $1,049 direct from Apple (that's the black, very cool model) - it flies, speed-wise (including using the phone/modem.)
