I don't know if this information has been posted before. But, just in case it hasn't been:
I use DTAC and the Simple plan. That means I get a 1 year expiration date whenever I top up. I like to keep the same phone number since I have lots of friends who have it.
This trip I discovered that DTAC has a web page where you can top up your mobile, as long as you have a top up card. Web site is:

You have to register. AND, to register you HAVE to be in Thailand (because they send you a SMS message with a password as part of registration). However, AFTER you register you can log on and use some of the services without being in Thailand and using your mobile.
Useful for some who might be nearing mobile expiration date but are not in Thailand - as long as you first register while in Thailand AND buy a top up card and bring it back with you.

I bought a DTAC Happy card last week when I arrived. The promotion plan was only good until 31 October. So I registered with the web page link you provided, and changed to the Simple plan. Just need to make sure I top up before leaving at the end of the month to get the 1 year validity.

When I first topped up, I did it outside of thailand. They didn't send me a registration SMS. I just had my friend buy a card in Thailand and read the numbers off to me on the phone. Then I topped up. I have one of the plans that keeps the card open for a year after each top up.

When you top up you will get an immediate SMS saying that your expiration date has been extended by a month (or more depending on the value of the top up card).
Maybe 1 day later you will get another SMS saying the expiration date has been extended a year. So, don't worry too much if you don't get the immediate year extension.
And, not a bad idea to get a 60bt top up card to take home with you.....

I have already thrown away the top up card I bought last week, but I was sure there was an expiration date on the card.

Regarding DTAC Happy DPrompt. I recommend you buy the 500 Baht top up card at 7/11 - it comes with 50 Baht extra credit.

Or you can buy an 800 baht top up card and get 900 baht at the DTAC stores such as the one at Siam Paragon.

Almost forgot to top up before leaving. Late night trip to 7-11 and bought 2 60 baht top up cards. Expire in June 2009.
Activated one of them and got the SMS indicating a 1 month extension to October.
At the airport, I got the followup SMS that confirmed validity had been extended 1 year.
I sure hope I don't have to use the second card.
