The bolow was poasted by Sai Tai in another thread.

The Google Maps directions I posted are what it suggests for drivers. I actually took a different route when I walked to Maliryn that Google reports as a bit shorter.

This is close to the route that I walked...

Google Maps - Shorter Walking Route

May be a bit difficult to navigate on foot, but I had a GPS device guiding me.

1. I was wonder what GPS units that are available in Thailand that would work both handheld and in a car?

2. Can they display maps in English and Thai?

3. Can they talk you through dircetions such as when you are driving and give you info like what lane to be in and such.

Any user experiences in BKK would be helpful.

My N95 (mobile) works both in the car and by foot. It has a option to plot a walking route or a driving route.

One can also purchase an optional Car Mount that will allow you to power it from your lighter socket, has a larger screen, and hands-free capabilities.

When I was in BKK at Christmas I found it to be very effective and accurate in guiding me around BKK.

I brought a Garmin Etrex H to try out. Modern chip set, "high sensitivity". In the Sukhumvit corridor, it's been better than the Garmin Foretrex 201, but it's not as quick and accurate as I'd want. Track replays wander a lot. It's faster if you leave it powered on, but it didn't acquire an initial fix after power-on when walking across the Siam Paragon plaza to the skytrain station.

I'm not interested in a mapping screen for Bangkok/Pattaya. I want a very compact device with an arrow and a few graphics to point me in the direction of some pre-programmed waypoints like skytrain stations. Kind of like a compass that will playback the track of where you went.

I'm too paranoid about GPS in phones, but I suspect sooner or later I'll realize that's the way to go.

Last December I had trouble navigating around BKK using Google Maps and Live Search on my smartphone. Maps were in Thai and my GPS receiver had difficulty locking in a fix, even in relatively unobscured areas of town. No joy even from my hotel window.

I have a HTC Galaxy model Windows Mobile PDA with built-in GPS.

I loaded MapKing navigation software on it. MapKing has maps for Asian cities in English and Chinese.

Difficult to get a fix while walking about. Instead, before going out I place it next to a hotel window for about 20 minutes. Once it locks on, it seems to stay locked.

Usually use the voice navigation feature.

I have an old Garmin, and it works the same when on foot as when inside a car -although it has to be by the window.

TU, I am not sure I understand you know what you mean when you say "... units that are available in Thailand that would work both handheld and in a car?" The GPS itself doesn´t care if it is in your hands or if it is resting in the dashboard of your car.

This touches this subject, Can I get a 3 month package from a phone company to be able to use my PDA package on my phone for google maps etc? Or am I out of luck without my own coverage. ATT won't let you go International unless you do a full year.

ThaidUp,,maybe I can be of help.
1) What if you hold it in your hand when in the car,, ROFLMAO,, I'm not talking your 5 cm here.
2) Maps are not displayed by language, but are,in fact' a drawing or like, representation of the areas involved.
3) If the system suggests you turn left,, then perhaps you could think for yourself and be in the left lane?
I better be very precise here,, if the system says turn right,, perhaps best to get in the right lane.

Any more help needed ThaidUp ?
Shoelace tying,,
Are you and Daffy related?
