I know many options that have been mentioned but any updates or best suggestions. Need cheap and clear from USA mobile to Bangkok mobile. So that the USA caller pays only "local" call rates or??

Thanks for any hints on what is out there to do this cheaply. Thanks for the feedback guys........

jj,

Good to see you posting. My wife says to say hi to you.

I just started using
http://www.cthai.com/Onecent.aspx

My Thai wife says that the quality is "average". We didn't use this web site for the card. When we were in Thai Town Los Angeles we found a small shop that was selling the $5 cards. But, since we "charmed" them, and since my wife was Thai, they sold us the card for $3.

Good points:
*Really cheap for us (500 minutes, assuming their ads are correct about $0.01/minute) for 3 dollars.
*Lots of "local access numbers". If you are using a phone with USA nationwide calling included, you probably have a choice of 100 numbers to dial.

Bad points:
*Only average quality, according to my wife
*They don't tell you how many minutes you have left to talk at the beginning of the call. Only the USD amount left on the card.

Other:
*In two weeks of use we got the "all circuits busy" on a Thursday night for 2 hours straight. This was the only time it has happened in the 2 weeks we have been using this card.

Before this card, we were using the 88 Asia card:
http://www.88card.com/10Expand.asp?productcode=81

Once again, we didn't use the web site to buy this card, because a local hotel is selling them in $5 and $10 denominations (no discount). I only switched because the other card was much cheaper. I believe this one charges $0.026/minute.

Good points:
*Good quality (better than the other card)
*Lots of local access numbers
*Tells you before each call how many minutes you have left

Bad points:
*Not as cheap as other card
*There may be an occasional day when "all circuits busy" happens for a long time.

I think you were there when I was telling our mutual friend about the magicjack. It works fine between the USA and Thailand, as long as you have a computer and broadband internet on both sides. Look for my post about it in the Tech section.

I started using Rebtel a couple of months ago and I am really happy with the call quality. Its a web-based prepaid subscription - the neat thing is that on their website, you can set up a unique local number (in your home country) for each person you want to call overseas. Then when you call your local number, the call is connected to the overseas number you have previously set up. Cost from the USA is 3.4 cents per minute to a Thai mobile phone. Quality is great - I can understand what my TGF is saying in spite of limited English and Thai accent. Its worth checking out - the website is http://www.rebtel.com/en/Home/
