Hi there,

its easy to be online with your smartphone. I found a Prepaid SIM Card called "Happy Internet", wich used the DTAC Net. The SIM Card is only 49 bath. With this SIM you can play only internet (1 Minute = 1 Bath, no phonecalls). They also offer special Promos like a Flatrate for only 1000 Bath/ month or 50 hours for about 200 bath. For upload a credit its easy to use the online-update at every 7/11 (just name your Phonenumber *101*# and the amount of the credit you like to have) or buy a pin for 60 Bath.

The hotline is very friendly and speaks also english. After the first connect the SIM is activated, a registration is not neccessary. I always had a very good line throuout Thailand, even in the north part.

Before you can use your Smartphone, you have to do some settings:

APN: http://www.dtac.co.th
Proxy: 203.155.200.133
Port: 8080
MCC: 520
MNC: 18
APN Typ: internet & mms

Its also possible to use this SIM by other phones with internet-connection.

Happy Internet!

My regular prepaid 1-2-call (AIS) sim can also get on internet, but I think it charge on the amount of data you use. If you dont have unlimited data plan, I think it's expensive to use cell phone network for internet. I try to connect to hotspot or free wifi as much as possible when I need internet connection in public places.

A year ago I posted....

I paid 99 baht for a Happy SIM with 30 baht phone time.

I then purchased Happy's 7-day unlimited data package for 249 baht. They also have a monthly unlimited data package. The data package allows me unlimited internet access without per minute charges. Without the data package I would be topping up the SIM every day.

So back to real time... how has the 3G situation progressed? Happy's (DTAC) EDGE data service was reliable but slow.

Do True, TOT, or iMobile (TOT reseller) have 3G service that is reliable yet? And do any of them make it available on prepaid?

TRUE has prepaid 3G service via their regular prepaid card - just sign up for the monthly $799 plan, and if you have an appropriate 3G phone (like an iPhone), you get 3G service in the supported areas. This provides you 1GB of service, after which you get throttled or need to pay more.

It's fast, and reliable. Covers parts of Bangkok (Sukh corridor), Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket.

If you have an iPhone 4 you can get a 599 plan that gives you unlimited everything - unlimited wifi, unlimited 3G, unlimited GPRS.

But I don't need a monthly plan. And I believe I read that you need to go to a True office to cancel.

the 3G by Happy / DTAC is fast enough to check emails, check-in online or read your RSS-Feeds fluend. In the middle of nowhere without any internet-cafe or wifi its ok..

... help me understand, DD... I believe Thailand is the only country in SE Asia that has no 3G, and have not awarded 3G concessions.

... but, you say there is 3G in Thailand?

... the big joke here is that Thais, childlike idiots to trends, are buying 3G phones like mad to try to create status, but there is no 3G in Thailand... you have to go to Cambodia for that!

No page in English, but I think it says that for 500 baht, you get 1GB of free data with calls charged at 1 baht per minute. SMS at 2 baht per message. Good for 60 days.

Typical data usage in the US on my iPhone is 1GB per month so the 1GB limit should be fine for a 15 day stay.

There also is a data-only plan with 2 GB for 500 baht.

i-mobile is a TOT reseller.

Yes, 3G in Thailand is a mess. I probably am wrong on some of this but...

I believe that TOT owns the 1900 frequency and CAT the 850.

After the Supreme Court canceled the 3G spectrum auction that was to be held in September to add addtional licenses for the 2100 frequency, the government gave TOT a green light to expand its 3G coverage. It was TOT and CAT who objected to the auction.

With the cancellation of the auction, TOT pretty much has a monopoly on 3G on the more desirable 3G frequency.

TOT is running 3G service over its existing 1900 2G build out.

True is running a trial using spectrum that is owned by CAT. After the spectrum auction was canceled, CAT ordered True to stop its 3G trial. But True has not agreed to do so.

AIS signed an agreement to join TOT in building out 3G service, and is also running a trial 3G service.

And I believe TOT now wants to auction 3G licenses in December.
