Ok, I have a nice little Nokia 8310 GSM phone which I know for a fact works in thailand.

Now, the phone company wants 22baht/minute for local calls within Thailand which I think is a bit high... (currect me if I'm wrong).

Now, I talked with my cell operator and asked weather I can deflower my nokia with a local sim card.  I was told that for a $30 one time fee, they would open the phone for open-ended sim operation.  Basically turning my Nokia into a butterfly

I can probably do it for cheaper in bangkok, but this way it's done under warrenty by my cell operator so there's less chance of a screwup.

Now, any ideas how much would it cost me to buy a local Sim for the phone?  How much is the air-time using such sims?  I plan to be in both bangkok and pattaya, same calling area?  Additional charges?

Any help on the subject would be nice.  Having a cheap-cell should open up my options.

thailand has an open net using the gsm system. make sure that the nokia you have works on the international 900 or 1800 mhz frequence which is not the same as in the US.
once you are in thailand just buy yourself a prepaid sim card from one of the providers like AIS, DTAC or Orange (at MBK for example) they will cost you about usd 25 with an airtime credit of about usd 10.
your sim card will work all over thailand with the assigned cellphone number. charges for international calls are about thb 50 per minute. domestic calls run as cheap as thb 3 per minute depending on the time of the day!

Cell company is playing coy, says it can't open the nokia to use all sims, missing code or some bull.  I'll have to pressure them or something, might be in LOS mid-january, so got about a month to sort this out.

That's nonesense.   A phone is either locked or not.  Take it to MBK and they will unlock it cheap.  Then buy an AIS SIM for 600 baht which includes 500 baht of talk time.  Or get Orange which is 100 baht cheaper.

Make sure your phone is either tri-band or supports GSM 900 or 1800.   US GSM (T-Mobile, AT&T, Cingular) are GSM 1900.

It's not very difficult these days.

I have a Nokia from india and all I do is just switch my Indian sim card for a Thai prepaid 1 2 call sim card and ti works. Switch back to my Indian sim card when I land in India.

My phone is 100% locked and I got it on a business-plan discount.

My service provider wants a $30 1 time fee to unlock it AND a $220 fee because I got the phone cheap on the business plan.

I think it'd be much cheaper just to buy a new cheap-ass phone in Thailand! (someone said 3000baht?)

Any idea which el-cheapo phone I can get in thailand with a cheap payment plan (considering it's basically a throw-away phone).

you can purchase a mobile phone package (prepaid cards included) in any of the following local mobile phone companies such as AIS (12call), DTAC (Dprompt) or Orange (Just Talk). By the way, AIS package, the market leader is the most expensive (but wider coverage) while Orange, a newcomer has the cheapest handsets.

TimidGuy,

You might be better off not buying a package but buy a phone seperately. Yu might pay a bit more but this way you ae not wedded to any company for your future trips.
