So, after several years of the PC market shrinking, contracting, and vendors announcing ever shrinking profits and marketshare... the Apple desktops and laptops are now the #1 desktops and laptops in the US.
Because Apple marketshare has been growing regularly every quarter for the past several years, as people have abandoned PCs and switched to Macs.

Not exactly true. People have more PCs than Macs, it is just that there is no single company that dominates PC sales. As a single company Apple produces more machines than any other single PC company, but when you combine all the PC manufactorers, there are far more PCs sold than Macs. Dollars do not equate into the actual number of machines sold.

Yes, the survey / numbers counted manufacturer marketshare.
There are tons of no-name cheap PCs, but what ultimately matters is dollars and cents - Apple consistently makes 30-40% profit on all their hardware. Most major PC manufacturers make less than 5% profit on their hardware, making the industry less and less profitable for the bigger players (look at how netbooks disappeared, for example).
Sure, no-name Chinese build-your-own and the Panthip/MBK guys are happy making a couple of 100s Baht on each system they sell, but ultimately that's subsistence, not a business model.
I should have more accurately stated that Apple is the #1 Brand when it comes to desktops and portables.

BEIJING: Concerns that the Chinese version of the Apple iPhone’s new voice-activated assistant ‘‘Siri’’ directs users to brothels has been raised by netizens, state media said yesterday. Users of the recently released Mandarin version of Siri were given several options for finding prostitutes upon request, but could not verify if the listings were accurate, the state-run China Daily said. Nearly 9 million users of Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter have commented on the function. One noted how efficient it was at finding brothels, rather than restaurants. Another message said Siri’s detailed knowledge of brothels puts Chinese law enforcement to shame. ‘‘A mobile phone can know all this while police do not?’’ the netizen said. AFP
