Agreed - they could have gone in a better direction with the naming.
Then again, it does keep in-line with their general product development strategy.

Looks familiar - I can't quite place it. 
Yes, alternate input keyboards can come in handy - though once you figure out the Zen of the Apple keyboard, it's quite spiffy.
(though I have a love/hate relationship with iOS 5 because it keeps losing characters on the iPad keyboard - not on the iPhone one, though.)

This is the magic:
Stop trying to achieve pinpoint accuracy on a tiny keyboard with fingers that are large and blunt-tipped. Your best bet is to type quickly, attempting to plant your finger somewhere in the general vicinity of the letter you’re trying to press. If you get reasonably close, the device will auto-correct your spelling errors quite effectively. The only key that you must hit accurately every time is the space bar.
Also, contrary to the above post, do NOT use your thumbs. Ever.
Use your right index finger, while holding the phone comfortably, at an angle, in your left hand. Then, type away, holding the phone flat, and your finger nearly parallel over the touchscreen, typing away by hitting the approximate keys you want to hit - and NOT immediately correcting the word.
