I raised this point in the "Taking a Laptop" thread but maybe it got overlooked. Anyway, I'll be travelling around Asia quite a bit over the next 6 months and will be using BKK as a base. I want to know if there are any photographic shops in BKK that can transfer my digital shots to disc so I can free up space on my memory cards without having to lug around my laptop aswell.  Otherwise does anyone know how much SD cards cost out in LOS (128MB for example).

Don't know how yours works, but my Sony has a cord and CD that I can take and hook into a local computer and then do storage, but you would have to find an internet place that would let you do.

Sony memory chips are as expensive in Bkk as in the US ..

Sony has an item that I have not looked into much, but it seems to allow you to put the memory chip into a floppy disc type thing that you put into any computer to upload the files .. then you could download them to another floppy ..

Better yet would be to find a place where you could put them on a CD ..

Pantip plaza may have places that could help too.

Many photo shops will take your card and transfer the photos to a temporary disk for printing (so they don't hold on to your card). I assume they could just put it on your disk (or sell you the disk). I assume it's just a rewritable CD, but I don't really know. Something to consider.

When do you travel to LOS?

If you don't get an answer on this forum, perhaps an expat or earlier traveller can check out a photo shop or two for you

Stueyb,

I have a Canon EOS D60 and the file size for a high resolution picture is around 4mb.  I purchased from http://www.drugstore.com a device called a mindstore digital wallet.  Price was around $300 and it holds 10gb of photos.  The size is just sligtly bigger than a pack of cigarettes and can be carried comfotably in a shirt pocket or fanny pack.  This allows me to take up to 4400 pictures without ever getting near a computer.  You can fill up a memory card and dump the full card to the digital wallet then start over again with your memory card.  Then when you have the time dump them to your laptop which is sitting back at your hotel room.  However, I recommend an even better product from Archos.  I think their site is http://www.archos.com and they make a "photo" player.  This device is 20gb and serves as a photo wallet and MP3 player.  If I'm not mistaken you can even play back MPEG 4 movies.  The price is in the $300 range and also has a 1.7inch display much like the one on your camera.  The mindstor digital wallet does not!  The digital wallet seems flimsy while the archos photo player seems like it is built to withstand repeated drops.  If I could do it over again I would go with the Archos in a heartbeat.
To me this is an excellent option instead of buying multiple media cards.  20gb is a lot of storage.
Hope that helps,

Rich

Find a camera / processing place near to where you will be staying - explain your deal, they are bound to be willing to assist.
Make 2 copies of everything.

There are lots of places around Thailand that can do this for you . I have found many in Bkk . The SonyDisk that someone mentioned before is a problem because it will not operate with Windows XP . I have found that most places I use computers around Thailand are using Xp as I do at home . I bought the disk and its been useless . Try the 2nd floor of Times Square on Sukhumvit . Theres 2 internet places on the second floor there Ive used before . There are several around Khao San . Across from MBK is a place that will do it for you . Anywhere Ive been before has digital editing suites on the computers as well . My little addition to the world .

A really cool setup is the Sony Mavica cameras - no memory sticks - it writes right onto a CD-R or CD-RW.  The camera's are a bit pricy but the CDs are cheap (as long as you don't buy them from Sony)
