Surprised Daffy did not start this thread. The newly released MacBook Pro 15 inch with Retina display - with 4 times the resolution of the one it replaces - is just beautiful. Powerful, small, elegant. I recently got my self a MacBook Pro 17 to replace my broken Dell work laptop (oldish 15 inch with 1920x1200) - just because of the 1980x1200 rez (only HP had one with that spec, but at a price and 4kg weight). With this release I bloody hope that HP, Dell, Asus etc. get their eyes open.

It's awesome, just damn expensive, especially here in Thailand. It's almost $300 more than in the US, and we won't get it until 3 to 5 weeks.

From what I've read of it, perhaps we should wait awhile before rushing out to buy it. There are some questions about how it is put together that make me doubt it can be fixed, at least at a reasonable price, should something go wrong.

... as I understand, one of the masterful strategies Apple uses for dominating the market with new tech is that they buy-up all the supply chain capacity for the new tech, preventing competitors from acquiring it in commercial scale for up to a year. ... might be a bit before HP, Dell, et. al. rise to meet Apple's new highwater mark.

I love Apple and hate Windoze with a passion, but the new Retina Macbook Pros are just too damned expensive. To get the configuration I need would cost $3,800 (in the US) with AppleCare. That's just too f***ing much to pay for a laptop. (that's w/a 1 Tb 7200 rpm SSD, 16 Gb of RAM) Sadly, since I do need to get a new main laptop for work, I'm going to switch to Lenovo...no, I won't get the Retina resolution but I'll get almost all the rest of the Macbook's functionality--and then some, in certain areas--for $2,300...sigh.
