it was just reported on the radio here in California that the jury came back in the Apple-Samsung trial,

Apple won, well at least a little bit,

Here is the first report
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/08/apple-v-samsung-verdict/

1.5 Billion dollars awarded !

Uh, they won decisively.

$1.05 billion awarded. If Samsung is found in willful infringement,my hat sum will be tripled.

All of Apple's patents have been recognized as valid. All of Samsung's patent claims declared invalid.

Plus, Samsung's counter-claim has been dismissed.

I'd think that counts for more than just "a little bit"

yeah I have to agree, I posted that when the news was just out and I guess they got the 1.5 billion confused with 1.05 billion.
and there was only a little info on the claims.

I think the patent process is flawed, but thats what it is so you need to work with it,

Samsung will appeal, but unless they can go after the patents they do not have much of a chance.

I have both and they are basically the same, my Galaxy 7 inch tab is nice for some things size wise and the iPad is much better if I am at Home because of screen size.

Pocket money for Samsung. Many analysts think they will regroup and get even a stronger marketshare.

I wouldn't be so sure, at least about the pocket money aspect.

During the lawsuit it was revealed that despite having claimed to have *shipped* 2 million Galaxy S units, they only sold 226,000, and ditto while claiming shipping millions of Galaxy Tab devices, they barely sold $37,000.

I have no doubt that similar, if not worse numbers, apply to most other Android manufacturers.

That said, $1 billion in punitive damages is just the assigned number. If Samsung's violations are found to be deliberate, that amount can be tripled - $3 Billion.

While, $3 billion, to Apple, is barely 1/3 of a quarterly profit, to Samsung it would represent an entire year's worth of *Revenues* from their mobile Android devices.

Samsung, as a conglomerate, might have deep pockets, but this is the a specific business unit that had to prove itself - and it didn't.

Also, bear in mind that this isn't over - Apple has already reduced to near zero their purchases of screens and displays from Samsung, while they were formerly the #1 customer, resulting in Samsung splitting off the display division in order to not have its losses affect the rest of the company.

This leaves CPU and RAM memory as the remaining products Apple buys from Samsung, still making them the #1 customer for components. Apple has already transitioned purchasing RAM components from Hynix, Elpida, and several other direct manufacturers (ie they do not use Samsung components), and Samsung has already hinted at splitting off their RAM Foundry business.

This would leave the CPU business, as Apple's ARM CPUs are still manufactured by Samsung chip foundries - though once the TSMC deal deal in Taiwan goes through, that might dry up for Samsung as well.

The end result - their component business and their mobile business would no longer be profitable, and generate continued losses.

Samsung Shares Drop $12 Billion After Apple’s Court Victory

Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/27/us-samsung-shares-idINBRE87Q00120120827

Samsung Electronics shares slumped 7.5 percent on Monday, wiping more than $12 billion off the South Korean giant’s market value, as a sweeping victory for Apple Inc in a U.S. patent lawsuit raised concerns about its smartphone business - its biggest cash cow.

Android, still winning.

So, Samsung, was it worth it?

Samsung capitulates, will modify phones to avoid Apple ban

Will continue fight to overturn or appeal patent verdict

Samsung, facing possible US sales injunctions against a range of products that generate billions of dollars in US sales annually, is talking to carriers about feature removals and workarounds along with design modifications on some of its smartphones in an effort to keep the products available to US customers. It will also pursue court remedies against the overwhelming victory scored by Apple in the recent patent trial, but will modify products in the meantime.

Samsung says it already has workarounds for two of the patents it was found to be guilty of infringing that are found in a number of products, most importantly the popular Galaxy S II smartphone, which is sold by all major US carriers, reports The Wall Street Journal. Keeping that phone on the market will also require some hardware design changes, as patent case observers and legal analysts think there is a high likelihood that Judge Lucy Koh will grant Apple-requested injunctions on eight Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S II.

The list of phones presented to the court for sales bans is believed to be just the beginning. The jury in the trial found a total of 28 Samsung products that were infringing on various Apple patents, and the company may well ask for further bans. Although the trial did not cover two of Samsung's latest products -- the noticeably less iPhone-like Galaxy S III and the "phablet" Galaxy Note -- Apple is pursuing a sales injunction on the S III in a separate case due to software infringements. Samsung is expected to work around those patents and is likely to keep the product on the market.

The eight phones targeted by Apple are Samsung's most popular models that were covered in the case, and are projected to generate $3 billion in annual US sales for the South Korean company. Any changes made to the products to keep them legal in the US are likely to also be made to international versions in due course to avoid similar lawsuits elsewhere.

Samsung says it will seek to have the jury verdict overturned through post-trial motions or the filing of an appeal, but assuming Judge Koh keeps the verdict intact, the appeals process is likely to take at least a year -- during which present and possibly future Samsung products could be subjected to injunctions, a possibility that would cost Samsung billions. The hearing on the sales injunctions is scheduled for September 20. [via The Wall Street Journal]

This Samsung thing is just the start - it's all about Android. Samsung was just the low-hanging fruit.

Remember Steve's "thermonuclear" comments? This is where this will lead.

Quentin Fottrell, reporting for MarketWatch:

Gazelle.com reports a 50% increase in Samsung smartphones over the past three days, which has led to a 10% drop in prices for those devices. “Consumers seem to be jumping ship,” says Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer at Gazelle.com. “We expect this trend to continue, especially with this latest verdict.”

$1 billion isn’t that much money, either to Apple or Samsung, but the PR value of this verdict is far higher.

This is just the beginning - and this is the expected outcome. Samsung's shameful and humiliating loss has resulted in them losing not just a lot of "cool", but at the same time, cool consumers do not want to be toting "copies".

Even less so in Asian countries...

Buh bye, Samsung.
