The following is a review of the 'Hi-Speed Internet' ADSL product of Telecom Asia. It's probably only useful for residents of Bangkok. Although the service also seems to be in Chiang Mai.

After being on the lookout for a faster connection than the dial up I was on, I stumbled upon the this year introduced 'Hi-Speed Internet' service of Telecom Asia at a presentation at Pantip.

Prices seemed to come down with no setup fees.

There are basically three packages

download/upload

256/128 THB 750 40 hours international access/ unlimited local access

512/256 THB 1,150 likewise

1024/512 THB 1,850 likewise

THB 14,24,45 respectively for going over the 40 hours international access.

The initial cost are THB 1,920 are for the Zyxel ADSL modem. There are no other costs.

Called 02-643-9647 (TA support) and got the information that it wasn't necessary to apply in person
at Pantip but could do it by telephone. But ignored this information and went to Pantip..... 'Sorry sir, no ADSL lines are free in your area at the moment. Wait for a month or 2.'

Called the guy at the number above, he says: 'Bullsh_t, lines are freed up in 3 days time in your area'.

Next day the guy comes over, let's me sign the application form and pay the THB 1,920 or the modem.

Modem is delivered two days later by messenger, complete with 10 hours of free test 256/128 connection. Setup is done within 1 minute (documentation is quite good) and I am ready to go! I am amazed about the speed (up to 30 kb.sec) and can't wait to get my hands on my user/pass for the 1024/512 package I ordered. Nothing in the box, though.

A call to 02-900-9898 (Asianet who takes care of the access) and I receive two sets of user/password. One for the local access (after one month not used at all) and one for the international access.

A new world is opens up. Try to sample some typical downloads (porn movie 30 mb, 6 minutes RealPlayer 10 mb 2 minutes Yahoo Messenger 3 mb, 15 seconds). Download speeds upto 100

kb/sec, uploads by FTP upto 36 kb/sec. But on average downloads are about 5 mb/minute....
Streaming video and audio (RealOnePlayer, ms Media Player) are no problem at these speeds.

Well, the negative part is that the 40 hours will be finished before you know (especially the first month). The following thought:

ADSL is great if you download, stream video/audio or do online gaming, for surfing (especially when you read a lot) it's not really that worthwhile. True, the pages are downloaded faster but you waste a lot of your time while reading. (However, it's very easy to connect and disconnect very easy, more about that later).

I developed the following strategy to preserve my 40 hours (some critics would say 'what's the use if you have a hi-speed internet connection').

I connect with my dialup 5 baht per hour acount (ji-net). Surf... and if I find something I need the speed for, I connect to the ADSL service without disconnecting the dialup. THe ADSL takes over... do my downloading and close the ADSL connection. Continue with the dial up connection. So you can have two connections live at the same time (but only one is at use).

Advantages

-Incredible down- and upload speeds compared to dial up
-Easy connect and disconnect (it's always on)
-Can use your telephone line for voice at the same time (through a splitter)
-Very little downtime (in four weeks only twice, around 10 minutes or so)

Disadvantages

-Only 40 hours of international access (this is probably due to the fact that international access comes through the very expensive CAT link, as opposed to local access).
-Less suitable for surfers and websites that require a lot of reading (news sites)
-Can only be applied for if you have a dedicated telephone line form TA

Final conclusion: Fantastic alternative to dial up. Works very well. Easy to setup.

I LOVE IT!

What about the new DSL service advertised all over, for 1550 Baht, and providing UNLIITED access? Any catches with that?

If you refer to ji-net please understand that it's only the internet access not the fee for the DSL....

Plus, also for most DSL services, which in some way are handled by TA, you have to be the owner of the telephone line.

how about the Hutch CDMA wireless high speed service?
at least a good deal if one got a compatible phone/data card already @ 500MB/2000bt/month...

Hutchinson Sierra Wireless Card, uses the cellphone network, not satellite, so it is mobile. Now the range is from Bangkok to Pattaya and east to the Cambodian border, some day should cover the entire country, PMCIA card that plugs into a notebook, and they probably have a way to use with the desktop also. You pay by the megabyte, not the minute. 300 meg a month card charges 1500B,

500 meg card is 2000B a month. You can purchase the card from logcorp.com, but it for 18,900 but it is being sold for 2000B less in a kiosk inside Watson's drug store at Royal Garden Mall, Pattaya

Dr love > Interested to discuss this more on Thursday too if that's ok. I met with a rep from Internet Thailand Public Company currently installing a guaranteed 10MB per minute LAN into our building, they connect to the Hutchison Global network via Hong kong. But they want 28,000baht a month for a 300Mb per month package and a 12mth contract, we'd also need a LAN to connect to them, sounds expensive to me.

I am moving to Bangkok in the beginning of August 2004 and I am an internet junkie that needs my fix every day. I have tried to check up over the internet the availability for ADSL in Bangkok and I am a bit confused and shocked over prices. Maybe I am reading it wrong or got the wrong information.

I am currently living in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the new republics in Europe that is really struggling with their economics after a devastating civil war, ethnic cleansing and genocide. The telecom marked is still monopolised with the governmental Bosnian PTT. I have a ADSL connection trough the state owned BiH net and I have 512 kbs downloading/128 kbs uploading, unlimited access time (can be logged on 24/7, which I am basically), but with a limitation to downloading 2 GB (2.000 MB) a month. If I am exciding this limit, I have to pay and addition for each MB, which is next to nothing. The monthly price for this is equivalent to Bath 2.722.

Are you guys trying to tell me that there is no service in Bangkok that can beat this price? I can not believe that.

Ideally I am looking for a 2.048kbs/256 kbs package with unlimited access in the price range 3.500-4.000 Bath per month.

Could anyone be so kind to provide me with some links to ISP providers in Bangkok with prices and also some personal experience?

Best regards,

Per Vers

There is a list of providers here. About half of these offer ADSL, but as other posters have noted you need to be sure that ADSL-capable lines are available where you live.

We have had DSL service in Chonburi for a couple months now. It works only half the time. Have had to replace parts on the dish 2 times already and have had t replace the "brain box" once already.

In Chonburi the service sucks! Overpriced and you can only use it half the time. SHEESH!
