Technology is changing faster than I can read nowdays. I have just discovered I can put wireless internet in my Motel and the cost is almost nothing. Wondering if anyone has any ideas on how long it might be before we see it in our favorite afternoon watering holes.

Hopefully never as it's a bogus concept. Consider the analogy of having a nice car [laptop] and only being able to drive it on a few roads and parking lots [hotspots]. Better to go with GPRS and cellular modem. There's a zillion times better coverage, the coverage is there now and it puts the consumer in control of availability and costs.

Why not both? The GPRS Air Card approach is great for coverage, but the speed still sucks... although it is certainly better than a cell phone modem. When you're near a hotspot... zip, away you go. I was in the Sheraton Royal Orchid last week, and they have free access on several floors. Blinding fast too....

Going wireless is definitely an advantage in a city that's geared up for it. Singapore, for instance, is peppered with hotspots (most coffee bean outlets are definitely with the programme.) I can see why that might not be a priority for Bangkok just yet. First, they've got to reign in the corrupt and immoral nightlife.
