Gentleman,

Mission: Escape the USA!

Problem: I need the expertise of the Bangkok tonight forum to help me through my plight. I have a career that affords me the luxury of working from home (USA). Quite frankly, I want to work from BKK aka Telecommute from paradise. However, my employer will only allow me to work from home.

Solution: I've researched international call forwarding companies that can do the call transfer, but I need a phone line in BKK to direct the calls to. A cell phone could work but it would be VERY risky. Besides, most of us can tell when we're talking to a person on a cell.

Does anyone know of a hotel/serviced apartment that has a direct phone line to each room (no lobby greeting) ?

Also, the international forwarding services typically have some sort of hold music or "please wait a moment" message...this would be a dead give away. Does anyone know of a forwarding service that will transfer directly without the music and greeting...I don't care if the transfer is delayed.

My hope is someone out there is already doing what I've proposed and can help me escape the USA!

Cheers,

Lildevil

Apply for your own line at TelecomAsia (now called TRUE) for around THB 3,500. Setup within a week.

No idea about forwarding services. Perhaps the virtual office services with connections in USA (some of them in Silom) can help you with that.

Time to get familiar with a nifty thing called Voice over IP (VoIP), and a great service called VONAGE. This has been tested in BKK.

All you need on the LOS side is a DSL connection that gives you international connectivity (preferably, unlimited). Vonage is a VoIP service that lets you plug a telephone adapter (usually a Cisco 186 box) into your DSL line, and a standard issue RJ-11 telephone into that adapter.

Via Vonage, you select a local area code that you want a number in, and off you go.

The moment your service is active, your phone in BKK will ring exactly like a US phone, whenever anyone dials your US number. No special tone, no voice message - just your phone, ringing. There are no charges for calls to and from the US, as the phone adapter thinks it is in the US - and Vonage offers unlimited calls in the US and Canada -- AND to any other Vonage (or VoIP phone).

So, you can call your boss, and the caller ID will show your US number. They can call you, and you get the standard caller ID identifying them. For all they know, they just called you at home.

It works, and it works quite well. You could even have the system follow you with forwarding on your local Thai cellular phone (after you make sure to change all voice mail and voice prompts to something like yours back home)

There are alternate service to Vonages available now, as well as means to set this up yourself. For your situation, I would recommend Vonage, though.

Now, the caveats:

- You can NOT use that phone to place calls to BKK (local to you) as they will be billed as long distance calls. Just have a second normal phone for your local calls.

- You will need to maintain a strict time table and schedule that is in line with the US location you presumably are in - this includes e-mail responses and phone accessibility. People aren't dumb, and after a while they will figure out that you always answer e-mails at weird hours. After a while, they will do the math.

- Be prepared for a situation where your boss wants to see you 'right now', i.e. have a ticket handy that is open and can be used quickly. China Airlines offers such open ended tickets.

- Lastly, you have the issue of the Thai visa, and the visa runs, or the need to keep it renewed and in good order. With some of the crackdown in coming, make sure you don't screw that one up.

And, no, I'm not doing this, or planning to do this - but my friends and myself have WAY too much time on our hands, so we spend our free time figuring out, and then testing out, such scenarios

Personally, I don't think itth the effort, particularly as you will need to live on US time. Better to work hard for 6 months, and take a vacation of 10-14 days, IMO.

Do serviced apartments/hotels offer DSL or cable modem access? Can someone recommend?

I recommend that you watch the movie "Ferris Buller's Day Off" for some tips.

This has gotten disaster written all over it, but I wish I had a ringside seat. I would send in the script to Hollywood for a new reality TV show so you can have an income stream after you get fired.

Actually I am pulling for your bro. Most bros here are cheating on their significant others, I believe you are the first to cheat on your company.

Keep us posted on the saga.

Centre Point, a serviced apartment I usually stay at, provides complimentary high-speed DSL or better internet access in every room. President Solitaire, from what I understand, does too.

I'm with ThaidUp on this one - I wish I could claim the rights on what you are planning, as it has all the makings of disaster written all over it. Props for attempting it, though.

lildevil, if you are in the States, I wonder how, with the radical change in time when you move to LOS, just how that is going to work.

If you deal in the USA your talking at least a half day time change which means working in LOS all night and sleeping in the day time.

Obviously a few of the guys handle it but perhaps life with that problem will not be as great as you think.
