Will most likely be in BKK in a few weeks time and maybe I´ll buy a few of the "movies" on sukhumvit, but I am wondering if I would have any problems getting theese out of Thailand. I saw an earlier post from a member that is now banned that this was a big problem... is it? What would happen in the worst case scenario? Most likely scenario? What do you recommend? Thanks Cheers

I brought back about 10 DVDs last time I was there. There are two main things, plus the little things, to worry about. First, NTSC vs PAL format. Most Thai DVDs and ALL Thai DVDs are in PAL (European) format. Most USA DVD players can only show NTSC format, and nearly all USA TVs can only receive NTSC format. Second, check on the Zones for the DVDs. Some will be "ALL", some zone 3 (Asia) and some zone 1 (USA). If your player is not compatible with the zone on the disc you won't be able to view it. Other things to worry about is the quality. There is one shop I went to in Panthip, managed by a stunning Thai girl of about 20, looks like she might be luk khrung (mixed Thai/farang), they showed me every chapter of every DVD I bought, plus carried kids, adult, and some porno titles. I'd insist on viewing the DVD at the shop and don't be afraid to ask for a better copy.

Well, I'll try, but these seem to be a bit dynamic. Surely a brother should be able to spot the hot girl. All of the video shop are on the same floor, for the most part, I think it's the 3rd floor (US numbering system), when you come up the escalators you'll go to your right. The one I used was toward the far corner, facing toward the street, just past the windows. It's a very small booth, only about 2 metres wide. One distinguishing characteristic was the 20" color tv sitting on a table in the back of the booth. They also had a pretty broad range of children's films, which is somewhat unusual. I think the price was pretty low, maybe about 200 B per, although I don't really remember. Since they cost about 1000B each here, it surely seemed like a great deal. Could have been as much as 300B, although definitely not more than that, or as little as 10 for 1800 B, although in retrospect that seems too cheap. Happy Hunting!

the price for most copy dvd's has dropped to thb 150 nowadays, but especially with the latest movies a lot of bad quality around. most of them are just filmed of a movie theatre screen. so you are right to gothrough every secion of each movie if time permits. on the other hand thb 150 for a copy, who gives a shit if it's crap! most dealers i know also will take back shitty copies as long as they know you as a good client!

Getting the copy DVD's and VCD's out of Thailand is not the issue. Bringing them back into the U.S might present more issues. There seems to be more and more of a crack down on copy industry. I have read some news reports where they have made corelations between copy music/DVD's to drugs. I find this kinda stupid. I would rather have the copy music/DVD's in the country then drugs. Anyways, if you are stopped at customs they "might" confiscate those items.

Good point ABC! You don't want to bring a whole bagge of VCD/DVD back to the US. You will get into trouble with the Immigration. I have friends from China who got into tourble for bring in too many VCDs. I would suggest that you throw away all the covers and packaging. Your DVD player on personal computer will be able to decode any type of VCD and DVD.

69er: That is exactly what I did. I threw away all the covers and mixed the dvd's and music with my other computer programs that I brought on CD, just incase I got stopped. I also carried them in my carry on in my laptop bag!! I once got stopped and I have 5 fake Rolex watches in my luggage. The customs officer said that he could confiscate all but one of the watches since he claimed that you can only bring in one, because it is illegal to sell the other ones. I explained that two were gifts and the other two were the identical one I was wearing incase the one I was wearing "broke". This way I would have two other replacements. He liked that answer and let me keep all of them. I did end up giving them all away since I bought nice Omega watch later on and had one use for them!! ha ha ha ha!!
