I am probably on my way to LOS next month and wanted to use my camera to take a few pix but I was wondering (and I don't even know what they call it) what current (?) Thailand and if anyone knows Cambodia too, runs on. Is it comparable to Japan or America? Thnx for looking.

You may not need to worry. Nowadays most ac-cd transformers for electronic gadgets have an input range that allows for you to use them anywhere. Check what is written on the charger (transformer). It may read something like this: AC 100 -240 V DC 5.3V 500mA You only need to worry about the numbers following the letters "AC". If you see a range from 100 to 240, you are fine. If you see only a single number... something like 110 V, then you may need to get another charger. Do not worry about the Hz frequency - it will not matter for your purposes.

fireplug - Make sure you get an adapter with a sufficient wattage rating, especially if you bring a laptop - I smoked the first one up I brought to BKK. I bought an 85 watt step-down converter from Radio Shack which powers my laptop, camera, and etc. Be sure it has the appropriate male connectors - similar to your, but thinner and a pair - A small power strip also comes in handy!

Exactly right about hertz and frequency. It only comes into play when you have an older gadget that counts cycles to keep time.

I don't think it has to do with the age of the gadget. It is just that power adapters (which convert AC power to DC) are usually rated for 50-60 Hz (and 100V - 240V), which covers almost everyplace in the world. But there are other types of new electrical "gadgets" that do need the correct Hz. Power in the US is 60 Hz and is 50 Hz in many other parts of the world including Thailand.

Always wondered, given that the first real power grids where in America so long ago (Edison Electric, and so on), why is it that the 120 vs 240 volt thing was never standardized world wide to one or the other? Anyone know the history of this? - Balls
