Madfrog was obviously exaggerating somewhat for the sake of humor, but I have found, despite several years of studying the language and having what I believe is a decent command of the tones, it is nearly impossible for me to make myself understood over the phone.
But if you are at a hotel and the girl you want has a name that doesn't sound too much like anyone else's there, then you should be fine I'm sure, comedy aside.

Well, sure I was exagerating...but yet in the past before to actually have the girls knowing where I live, I had to repeat some time up to 15 or 20 time the name of my hotel to the receptionist and various other girls...
Now no problem, I just say who I am and what I want, the whole team know me and the old ones can explain to any new girl where to find me

Well, Mr. bluber, I've lived here for seventeen years and don't speak a single word of Thai. Not one. Moreover, I've never once discovered any reason to learn any.
Frankly, I can't imagine why anyone would willingly squander their time learning such an inconsequential language. Just to have an easier time ordering up hookers or telling a taxi driver to which bar you're going? Good Lord.

I know guys who have lived here for THIRTY years who can't speak Thai.
I assumed they just spend a lot more money for things than those of us who can read the language.
Some co-workers of mine would send the drivers out for everything, instead of just stopping to buy it themselves.
I just LOL when they suggested I pay one of the drives to go out & make a copy of a key for me. Their going rate to the drivers was 100b
It only cost 20b to make the copy on my lunch break.
This is just a small example. Imagine how these guys get screwed on big value for other things.
One of the guys I know who has lived here for THIRTY years & can't speak Thai relies on this Thai bar owner to do everything for him.
What's funny is, she's the biggest sheister in the whole f***in' town, so she gets commish on everything the f***er does, from renting a house to buying a car.
He got upset with me when I told him he has no idea the money he could save if he just took that scheming whore out of the chain of events.
She even tried to screw her own brother-in-law on buying a vehicle. She wanted to put it in her name instead of his, LOL.
Luckily a friend & I had already coached him on this caniving beeyotch.
so a guy who had been in town for 2 months one-uped the guy who has been around for THIRTY years. Funny stuff.

Unfortunately I suspect Old Asia Hand is not joking at all! I was introduced to a German guy here last year by a friend and business associate of mine (a Thai) who told me his friend was a very highly respected college head.
During our conversation I learnt that he and his wife had been in Thailand for more than 10 years.
Later I tried some of my basic textbook Thai on him, anticipating a free lesson in how to properly pronounce Thai, but instead I received a blank stare in return, followed by a rather embarrassed apology when he said he was sorry but he did not understand or speak any Thai at all, he had never learnt!
His lame excuse was that all the teachers and parents wanted to speak to him in English, so he had never had the opportunity to learn.
