Nic, at Mango I have NEVER had to:

I've always had well above average experiences there at standard prices. Tips are not expected or asked for beyond the 'standard' prices. Crap - I sound like an advertisement. There are lots of places I get great service and Mango has been among the best recently...
It is pathetic any place to have to promise a tip in advance as you said!

Wandered into Mango today...or tried to, it was shut! 
I'm now looking at their website for the reason and sure enough they have closed 28th Dec and reopen 2nd Jan. I find that surprising considering this could be a high income period for them (peak tourist season)
Okay plan B. I walk around to Snow White Oily on Soi 26. Mamasan tried the newbie trick of not showing me the book and bringing out the next girl in the que (one of the more plain girls). I was not enthusiastic with her choice and demanded the book. I was then told there were only 2 girls available  . I ended up booking a girl for tomorrow.

Arrived around lunchtime at 12:20 today. We had a teeny-tiny line up of 3 girls.
