Does anyone know if traditional (or not so traditional  back walking massage is available? Is that just a myth?
Also, how common is the ability to speak reasonable English? Would it be very tough to fid a lady that would also be willing to function as a bit of a tour guide, Thai language tutor and translator?

I know of atleast one place on earth which has the so called backwalking massage avilable!
That is in a tiny provice of KERAL, India - termed as Gods Own Country by tourist brochures and selected as one of the must see locations on earth by National Geographic Magazine.
The back walking massage is available there as part of the tradinal medicine - Ayurveda- practiced there even now in an active manner. Of course there is no Sanuking involved and the process is carried out by trained experts who would be of the same sex as the recepiant.
The whole process is very very rejuvenating and is spread as a programme of 5 to 11 days. (Massage is only about 1 hour ever day and followed by many othe procedures).
This I am posting as only a bit of GK as it is not really connected.

I realise that it is now nearly a month since the last post on this subject - but I have only recently joined this Forum and I do have some information that may be helpful . So even if this information is now too late for use by the original poster , I will still post it for the benefit of others .
Back Walking is a part of Traditional Thai Massage (TTM) - however it is very rarely practised in modern Thailand because to step on someone with your foot is considered downgrading .
However there are a number of TTM places along Ratchadpisek Road ( on the stretch from Emerald Hotel to Posiedon ) where the girls do back-walking - very often without being asked and definitely if asked .
Some of these places are :-
SUBWAY ( they have TTM as well as Oil Massage - the TTM is B300 for 2 hours + Tip ).
RATCHADA.(B240 for 2 hours + Tip for TTM ).
MAI HUA (B260 for 2 hours + Tip for TTM. ).
VIP (Here the girls are mainly interested in sex for money so I wouldn't bank on a good massage ).
In all the above places the girls would be more than willing to do back walking - partly because they find it less strenuous to massage the back this way than with their hands .
I should mention that some of the girls are experts at back-walking - i.e. they really do give you a fantastic massage . But there are also those who use it as a way to pass the time .
I would suggest that you pick a girl ( from the fishbowl) according to the weight that you think you can comfortably handle on your back for about 30 minutes.
If you feel that you may not be able to communicate with the girl ( to tell her that you want back walking ) then tell the Papasan or Mamasan and they will instruct the girl accordingly .
