Although I am new to this Forum I have spent the last 4 months going through nearly all the posts made so far ,and I am quite suprised to see that Traditional Thai Massage (TTM) has hardly been covered - even though that is what Thailand is famous for !!!
I am a self confessed addict of TTM and so I will take it upon myself to sing it's praises .
(1)Unfortunately since the main purpose of M.P.'s & Oil Massage Places (OMP's) is to have sex one does not and cannot get a really good relaxing and therapeutical massage - this you can get with TTM.
(2) Even though TTM does not imply sex - there are places ( Subway , Nataree , VIP ) where most of the girls are willing to have sex for payment .
(3)You get a wider variety of girls at TTM as compared to M.P.'s or OMP's . At the M.P's or OMP's the girls usually have to be fair skinned whereas at TTM you can get Isaan girls , Burmese , Mainland Chinese , etc.
(4)Having a TTM is the sublime version of drinking at a bar because you can have your Beer , watch T.V. and at the same time be massaged by your favourite girl . Incidentally TTM's also have rooms for 2 , 4 , 6 & 8 so you can literally have a party with Beer & snacks with T.V / Video / Karaoke + massage for all .
(5)Because TTM's are not primarily for sex you tend to get a large number of "unused" or only " slightly used" girls .
(6)Although the basic time is 2 hours (B240 to B300 +Tip) - if you and the girl hit it off you can extend the period for as long as you want ( probably cuddling with her or sleeping while she lightly scratches your back or sleeping while she runs her hands through your hair - in other words SANOOK ) for B140 to B150 per hour .
(7)Many of the girls from TTM would be happy to go out with you and maybe you would end up with a long term relationship .

I agree on these virtues - most, anyway - but I'd like to pose a silly question to someone who seems to have done the rounds so much ...
I'm looking for a good place where you can go in, have a drink and look-around before being confronted with the full on fish-bowl. This goes for both TTM and oil - I've only been to a couple where you can sit and relax first - unfortunately at these, the quality wasnt that good...
Often find myself with this delimma (life is tough!!) when I have a spare hour or two before meeting people down Sukhumvit way. Also interested in nice establishments (small scale) on New/Petburi, as I'll be doing a lot of work near there soon ....

Not a silly question at all .
All the TTM places mentioned in my first post have reasonably large and well appointed "Coffee Shop" areas where you can relax with a drink or coffee or tea , even have snacks or a meal ( Thai food ). They will not hurry you along . You can pick the girl while you are relaxing and she will come and sit with you ( but her time will start then ) or you can pick the girl after you are fully relaxed .
For Oil Massage try Subway - they have a nice Coffee Shop / Bar area and many of the girls are irrirestible .
There are places on New Petchburi road but they are not very Farang friendly so you may not enjoy as much as the ones on Ratchada .

I hope I have understood your question . But before I answer your question I should clarify that there are many types of TTM's :-
(1) Wat Pho .
(2) Spas in Resorts and 5 Star Hotels .
(3) Pure Massage TTM's - mainly in the Thai areas like Saphan Kwai , etc.
(4)TTM by Blind persons.
All the above do not have the advantages I mentioned in my first post as they are purely for massage .
The kind of TTM's that I was talking about has 2 varieties :-
(a)The touristy type located in the Pratunam , Silom , Sukhumvit areas .
(b) The ones I mentioned .
In the ones I mentioned the routine is roughly the same - i.e. you can sit in the Coffee Shop area and select a girl from the fishbowl ( with the help of a Papasan or Mamasan if required );you either pay for the number of hours in advance or after the massage ; go up to the room with the girl ; change from your clothes into the pyjama suit ; order drinks for you and the girl ; the girl washes your feet in a basin and dries them ; then starts the massage first for your feet and your legs while you are lying on your back ( you can either watch T.V. or chat with the girl which they all love to do or sleep which is what I love to do . After about 40 minutes on your legs she then proceeds to your hands then asks you to turn over and does your back including back walking if you want ; then she sits against the wall and with your head in her lap she massages your head , forehead , shoulders , upper back and chest & finally with you sitting crosslegged she massages your neck and lower back .
HOWEVER IF YOU WOULD PREFER A CHANGE - SAY A BACK MASSAGE FOR A LONGER TIME OR YOUR LEGS MASSAGED FOR A LONGER TIME THE GIRL WOULD BE MORE THAN WILLING TO COMPLY .
If you wish to progress to sex then the places to go are SUBWAY , NATAREE & VIP where even if you do not ask for it the girl would hint at it - but the decision would be yours.
At the other places you would have to work on the girl - something like dating and trying to get to first base ( you may not succeed the first time but after she finds you are really interested in her it will be a piece of cake ).

Tahnks Arramsey -- detailed reply indeed. Personally I love to chat up the ladies. I have often found though that the chat in the TTM parlours tends to get rather soft toned since the silence is too loud. Once I did drop off to sleep like you said since I went for the massage straight after checking into my hotel and then when I awoke, I realised I had missed the enjoyment of the massage. Well to each his own.
Sex? More than that what I would love is for the lady to give me a good naked massage ( I mean me naked). I have tried asking at some of the TTMs but they invariably giggle and refuse to let me get naked, saying rules, etc.

Unfortunately the places I have mentioned are not on Sukhumvit but on Ratchadapisek Road on the stretch between Emerald Hotel and Posiedon .
Regarding tipping , from the girls I hear that Thais tip only B20 or B50 ; Others tip B50 to B100 and a few tip B150 (this is only for the massage ).
I have always tipped B100 for each hour ( so that is B200 for the standard 2 hours ) . The reason I do this is because I am a softee and I feel that for the amount of work these girls put in and the pittance they get from the fee (45%)they deserve to get something more .

If you want a massage at a TTM where you are fully naked - this may not be possible . However you could B.F. the girl and take her to a short-time hotel ( many in the Ratchada area ) where she would be willing to do the needful .

You sure are my type of guy. I mean, that was what I always do every day I was in Bangkok.
I usually stay in Merchant Court or Emerald. The farthest hotel away from TTM is FOrtune Bluewave.
Gonna be there in March. If you are there in March, lets me know.
