Does anyone know if traditional (or not so traditional  back walking massage is available? Is that just a myth?
Also, how common is the ability to speak reasonable English? Would it be very tough to fid a lady that would also be willing to function as a bit of a tour guide, Thai language tutor and translator?
Thank you soooo much for providing this forum. It has convinced me to go to Pattaya.

I've not had anyone walk on my back during Thai massage, that I can recall, but I've had this from somewhere. I'm sure you could request it.

Back walking is not part of traditional Thai massage - try Japan.
Most of the active tourist areas have plenty of women who speak English to a degree. Many more educated Thais have better technical knowledge of English than most of us. They study it in school. Of course, they can't SPEAK English, but they can tell you what a garand is, etc.
Many bar girls pick up English, but rather limited in scope. No sparkling intellectual discussions there. Easy to find one to play tour guide, although you will be surprised at how few know ANYTHING about Thailand, or even Bangkok, outside their bar and the area where they live. Of course, if you find a good one, she may translate for you, and keep you from paying too much, etc. Take a good guidebook with you for a list of sights to see. Your companion will probably be seeing them for the first time, too, which makes it even more fun. The little details she will know, such as how to act in a temple, what is good to eat, etc., will make it a blast!
As far as finding one to teach you Thai - my advice is to FORGET that. Even educated Thais will waste your time trying to teach you Thai. If someone is not trained to rescue you from tone-deafness, and specifically trained to teach Thai, you will at best be confused, certainly confusING, and certainly lost to any REAL conversation.
Sorry if this sounds pessimistic, but if you are serious about learning Thai, there are plenty of good venues. Unfortunately, bars are NOT among them.

I can agree with everything except for this part. It's gerund.

If many of the more educated Thai people have a good technical knowledge of English, can I presume that even though they might not speak it, they can read it? Have any of you ever used any translation software, such as Babblefisch (sp?)? Was it worth a dam? The 'Tonal' nature of the language does sound like it would be difficult for a westerner to learn.
Also, is there anything in particular (besides the obvious of the Money) that is not readily available in Thailand that a Farang like me could bring from the US that the ladies would appreciate (clothing items, perfume brands, candy brands, etc.), or is everything that we can get available there as well?
You guys are Awesome! Thank you so much for this information. It makes all the difference. I can't wait to visit.

It is NOT a myth. I am not sure if this IS part of a traditional Thai massage or not. But certainly it was NOT available at most of the venues I've been at. However, I was in Pinklao a couple of times (near the pier) and there is a smallish MP catering mainly locals. ALL the rooms got this steel rod pretty like a "curtain rod" over the bed and close to the ceiling. I asked about that weird thing and the TGs said it is used for a back walking massage and the steel rod is the tool for the girls to keep the equilibrium while performing it. I confirmed this with the manager.
I must confess that I went there for a "service" and NOT for a massage so, NO time to explore back walking massage indeed, but I saw the "rod" and definitely a back walking massage was available upon request. My Boss use to try it twice a month.

I had a traditional massage on Sukhumvit around Soi 4 and the girl walked on my back. I didn't like it that much either. She also treated me like gumby and I thought I was in a forced yoga program, but it felt good afterwards.
