I know this sounds like a stupid question, but, for a newbie – could somebody care to describe what exactly is an “oil massage?” What is the difference between this and a “soap massage?”

The biggest difference is with an oily, you can actually get a bit of massage and the set-up is different. A soapy is basically: Let's get to business.
I prefere the oil version.

Oil massage deals with a massage spreading oil all over your body. The lady will put a fair amount of oil and give you a nice massage, including your feet.
Now, if you go to BARONS you will get the OIL MASSAGE stuff but the girls are there mainly for the EXTRAS. It means that after few minutes of oil treatment with cheap baby oil you can ask if the TG can go for something else....then you agree on the cost of the EXTRAS and get it for usually 1.5K....you pay this amount to the girl straight forward after the service is completed.
Look, another OIL MASSAGE is also available. The one involving a nice oil preparation with some fragances that you feel you gonna die in heaven. This oil massage is the one performed by ladies well trained in this stuff. You can get these services mainly at high class hotels and it is an experience you will never ever forget. At those hotels there is no extra service. You go for the massage and that's what you will get. Prices? I usually pay 1.1K at Pan Pacific Hotel for instance....50 bloody minutes....that's all what I can get there....CHEERS!!

all major 4 and 5 star hotels have a massgae center where you will get the aromatherapy massage!
in pattaya i use the marriott, here in bangkok the oriental has got a splendid (if not the best) aroma oil massage!
other places to recommend the EVASON close to Hua Hin!

The one at the IMPERIAL QUEENS PARK (Sukhumvit Soi 22) is also very nice. Was in the Marriott Hua Hin but complimentary oil massage service was not that good.
The PAN PACIFIC HOTEL (Japs headquarters) is located next door to Robinson SILOM, which is just steps away from the junction Rama 4 w/ Silom Rd.
