Where are you going to visit and what type of visa are you looking for?

If you want to renew a tourist visa and have a passport which is part of the visa on arrival scheme then you only need to visit a border post. (Short extensions can be had at Immigration on Sathorn Road fairly easily.)

If you want to get a renewal then the nearest place is Poipet on the Cambodian border (Arunyapathet).

This can take anything from 2.5 to 4 hours to reach depending on transport used. Most convenient is a minibus which leaves early a.m. from your nearby hotel (Petchburi Road would be no problem, maybe the Amari) and drops you at the border, gives you enough time for lunch and a dash across the border and back and returns you to Bangkok. See your local travel agent, costs vary but may be 500 to 600 Baht.

The amount you may save by using the regular bus service may be outweighed by the cost of getting to the bus station. The appropiate bus station may be the terminal at Sukhumvit Road (Ekkamai) but maybe one of the others could confirm this.

If you want fast then hire a car or a taxi (choose a newish one) and they will be most happy to take you for a fee, budget on 1,000 Baht. Not the cheapest way but may be more flexible.

On the occassions I have gone there I have driven myself and it is not a difficult drive in daylight.

At the border you can visit Cambodia without a visa if you are only going to the casinos. Any further afield and you may be picked up for no visa.

Just return through the immigration point and they will stamp in a new visa, no questions asked.

It is not advisable to use a service which takes your passport for you. This was a useful service as everyone made money and it saved the bother of going there when it was a formality. This has been clamped down on partly because of security issues and partly because people were being ripped off with fake visas.

Alternatively you may wish to apply for a long term visa such as a 90 day Class O (?). You need to find an overseas Thai embassy to visit. The easiest are Singapore, Hong Kong, Vientiane, KL etc. This is low season and cheap packages to Singapore in particular are readily avilable.

Good luck.

To Aranyaprathet/Poi Pet, go to Makkasan Station. Train leaves at around 6:00 am. THB 47 one way.

No matter what transportation you take... it will take you a day anyway.

But as you worry about your soapie, I guess you're a tourist.

As BKK Banger said... go to the Immigation at Suan Phlu. Depending on the type visa you can get 10 days up as extension. THB 1,900. Three hours in total.

DrLove,

Have you taken the train before?

What was it like and how long did it take? I love train trips in Thailand but they can be very slow at times.

Yes... about 14 times....

Hualamphong 05:55
Aranyaprathet 11:20 (more like 11:55)

So around six hours. Pleasant drive through the countryside.... lots of snacks and drinks available on board. Your butt might get stiff a little....

But for THB 49 OW it's a great deal!

A mate did the visa run via the train, said it was well worth the long journey. He did have to wait 3 hours at the entry to Thailand. Wasnt that busy he said so perhaps the locals are checking up more on who is here for along time?

DL,

Sounds great. I personally like the 3rd class but after 6 hrs my butt would be sore. You do meet some interesting people on the train and there is so much more to see.

The long delays recently at Poipet / Aranyaprathet I understand was due to a clampdown in Jan or Feb. Someone at a senior level (I believe the DG of Immigration himself) cottoned on to the "visa services" which were presenting 20 or 30 passports at a time and bribing the officers to stamp in visas. He was concerned at the security issues following a similair fiasco in Hat Yai with terrorists being let in.

There was then an almighty hullabaloo as they found they had been accepting bribes for all sorts of irregularities. (Not very observant)

Hence they started checking every visa in each passport against the computer to check for previous fake visas and arresting those who had previously had fakes.

Some of the poor buggers they arrested had no idea, they had used a "visa service" to avoid the day long trip and were then banged up for weeks in some cases.

Others had avoided going on overseas trips for long term visas. Any visa saying issued in Honolulu will immediately be suspect.

An acquaintance of mine was lucky just to get a slap on the wrist. The visa was genuine Honolulu but his passport clearly showed he had not left Thailand at that time.

The moral of the story is, if you have previously had a fake, destroy your passport and get a new one. Take a photocopy of your current legal visa beforehand and the Thais will happily stamp it into your new "clean" passport for a modest fee.

Actually it's 12 hours, unless your butt heasls fast while doing your visa thing...

Was there last Monday... start to finish... 30 minutes. Nobody in front of the counter at the Thai side.

I once overnighted in Arunyapathet and got there at opening time. No queues.

Once the buses turn up around 10 a.m. the really big queues can form.

Partly these are Thais and Chinese visiting the casino and partly visa run people. If you go midweek and in low season the queues should be much smaller.
