Guys

I'm curious as to what those of you who are living in Bkk brought over with you. I understand most rental places are fully furnished. Did you leave everything behind and just bring a suitcase, or did you bring the whole house over to LOS with you?

Mr Alan
I just bring the normal stuff that I take on any vacation. Most things can be purchased in BKK if you are so inclined to buy these things. I really don't need any more clothes, so I bring most of mine with me.

The only thing that I would make sure you bring is your favorite condom, especially if you need a larger size. The ones in BKK are too small for me. But some guys just buy them in BKK.

I guess I don't really know exactly what you are talking about.

With all due respect Mr. Alan, I think he's talking about living here and not vacationing.

OK, I missed the part about living in BKK. But I still don't know exactly what items he is considering bringing over to BKK if he will be living there.

My answer still stands. If you need large condoms, bring your own. Just about any other consumable can be purchased if it is an item that one would normally purchase back home. But there are some exceptions, and more specific information is needed.

I woudl certainly bring over things like music CD's, clothes appropriate to BKK, etc. There is no use buying new stuff if you already have it and it fits in your luggage.

Scobie,

If you're working for an InterNational company that has stationed you here, you should get a shipment of your household goods paid for by your company.

They usually will send 3 cubic meters or so of goods for you at their expense.

Find out what is there allowance and then start figuring out what you can fit in that amount of space.

Most likely you can pay for additional space yourself if necessary, but most of the time their allowance is enough to get the necessities over to LOS.

and don't forget, if you're going to bring expensive furniture, you'll also want to bring that back with you some day, so you might want to leave room for picking up items in LOS

Scoobie

While I don't live in LOS, I have been thinking very seriously about coming over for an extended stay (12-18 months) and have given some thought to your question before today.

My thoughts coincide with that of Mr A, basically anything that you want/think that you will use and are unable or unwilling to get in LOS and can fit it into a bag.

So for me and as per some of the suggestions of Mr A, laptop computer, camera (mine is new), favourite cd's, vegemite and the very much needed oversize condom's.... etc etc

Same with cloths, you may not want to do a 100% replacement of your wardrobe. If you are a big guy (horizontal or vertical) or have size 12+ shoes, you would definitely bring these over.

I think the answer to your question is more individual then generic, but you're probably seeing if there is something you haven't thought about.

But if you do forget some delicacy from home, you can always see if one of the bro's can bring it over for you. As for everything else, there is a lot of truth in BKK being a shoppers delight.

Cheers

Scooby, when we moved over we brought with us mostly personal stuff that I did not want to leave in storage back home. Things like photos, some books, a couple of special girts from family etc. That was it, clothes, I brought just enough to get by and bought new here mostly.

Also brought some food favourites, specially on our last return trip. Some things you cannot get here and if they are your favourites, it is well worth bringing them. But you will not know if they have it or not until you are here or ask us. I brought vegemite, but found a couple of shops that have it, only 2 mind you. Also some favourite biscuits etc, but most stuff is available and if you want to stick with your favourite western stuff, it is much more expensive than back home.

I will tell you one thing to bring a good supply of, 'anti perspirent' they have very few brands here and most is crap.

I knew about the pies etc. Seeing vegemite is now an american owned product, somehow I'm not surprised - but have never seen it (nor have I looked for it). Don't know how well it sells, its an acquired taste straight on toast/bread.....

I was with this american gal who was over her in Aus and bought some for her to try, she gave it a whiff and passed on it!!!

But there are more foul tasting things around that beat Vegemite....

Cheers

Scobie,
Yes, most of the rental places, either condos or apartments, are completely or partly furnished. you will have a better change to find something of your liking when you do not bring furniture. I furnished my house myself in Phuket and later in Bangkok. This limits me now in finding a possible new condo or apartment. Most are furnished and it seems often impossible to have this removed. You might end up paying for storage of those goods if you really wanted it out. I would advise to first start looking where you want to live, what kind of acomodation, price etc. Then start roaming the net for options, you might even use the BTF. This will probably greatly help you to decide if bringing furniture etc to Thailand.
My suggestion is that you rent a furnished place and bring limited household goods. Maybe only those items with some personal value so that you might feel home in LOS.
