I have a 2 part request for guidance.
I am looking into the possibility of moving to Bangkok and taking a 1 year executive MBA or the regular 2 year program at Sasin, part of Chulalongkorn University. I have only spent time in the Sukhumvit area but I think that to live in an area away from the mayhem might be a good idea, especially for a year or 2 stay. I think there would be too much distraction and I would end up partying every night. Do those of you living in the Suk area have this problem? Ideally, I would like somewhere within walking distance of the university (I don't know the area) and close to the skytrain.
Second part is about serviced vs. regular apartments. I am looking at roughly 40000 baht/month or less on a one bedroom serviced apartment. I like the idea of a hassle free serviced apartment. How much cheaper is a regular apartment with all of the trimmings and is it easy to get everything hooked up only using English? I do plan to learn Thai. Anybody have any pros or cons about long term serviced apartments?
Basically, what are good residential areas and is serviced worth it for very long stays?
Of course, I would plan to arrive early and scout out the areas but some recommendations in advance about areas would be great.

I will keep them in mind.
I am not overly concerned with the move itself as I only plan to bring a laptop and some clothes. I am more interested in first hand knowledge of living in different areas within the city for a longer length of time.

There are some decent property agencies out there, one with a good updated website is Hamptons Property http://www.hamptons.co.th. Their staff all speak English.
