Last Friday I ventured to my local supermarkets (Big C & Foodland) for the weekly shopping. I adhere to a strict list of groceries to buy with a certain amount of money.
But when I was pushing the buckled wheel trolley through the aisles I was somewhat taken back by the large price increase of my intended purchases. And it was not only the items I wanted but many others as well. Set out below are some of the items and the new price with the variations in those price from last week to this week.
Wholemeal bread (12 Slices) up 3b.
Butter 200 gms up 4 b.
eggs (10) up 6b.
Durex condoms (3) up 10b.
Bath soap (1 cake) up 2 b.
Noodles (pack of 10) up 14b
Coffee (red cup) 50gms up 5b.
Sugar (white) 500gms up 14b.
Bacon (1kg) up 29b.
Uncle Tobys Vita Brits (1kd) up 12b.
Vegemite (1kg) up 9b.
So as you can see there are some quite significant price rises. I do not know if it because of the recent hurricanes in the U.S causing fuel to get out of control or the food giants just want more money.
Well I have made some enquiries with a large supermarket chain in Myanmar. It appears at this stage that I could save at least 186b per week if I was living there.
So I have been in touch with the landlord here in Bangkok and they are willing to reduce my lease so I can live in Myanmar. This has turned out well, because the landlords family comes from Myanmar and they will put me up for a while in their village until I get back on my feet.
BTW, I will still find a computer somewhere over there to communicate with BTF members who also may be interested in coming to Myanmar. I will post prices of the groceries as well.
Myanmar here I come.

Your shopping observations are spot on: Inflation in the Kingdom is said to be up 6% so far this year. But the local economists are forecasting the worst is yet to come. They say it will be a dire year for many here. At least you have choices....

However go for it. Move there then after you move back to BKK (due to no internet and shitty clubs).

Main reason for the price increase is said to be caused by that the Thai government did take a 56% price subsidies on fuel. So everything from taking goods from the country side too the factory is more expensive, and from the factory too the wholesale and then out too the shops. In a country like Thailand where food in the fields/trees is cheap, the transportation is a large part of the price you pay in the stores. How is it with taxi fares are they higher now? It is also said that the price raise will continue in the nearest future, and that a top will come in late 2006/early 2007 -but who knows what can happend in between?
