Guys...   bearing in mind that BK to my knowledge is an "in yer face" buzzing noisy trafficy but enchanting metropolis -    where can a BKKer  go within say half an hour of sukhum.. to find a quiet green park to act as an oasis of peace/sanctuary/chill out/trysting place etc..

I am aware of one small park with a lake  very small by london standards, that is central ( near some big shopping centre as i remember)  but are there any other spots to get away from it all while still in BKK ?

How about Lumphini Park?

One reason I always stay the Grand Hyatt is that it has this great roof top oasis with pool, natural rock/tropical garden style hot tub, carp pool, gardens, and surrounded by trees so it seems like your at a resort.  Ok, you can still see some buildings and hear the train but it's a great convenient escape.   Love having lunch by the pool, some drinks and just relaxing.    Costs a bit more than some other hotels but not as much as some on the river.

How about:

Queen's Park (Sukhumvit)
President's Park (also Sukhumvit I think)
Sanam Luang next to Grand Palace
Chatuchak Park next to Weekend Market
Railway Park (and Golf Course) next to Central Plaza

plus the aforementioned Lumphini Park

This list is off the top of my head (the tattooing was very painful!) and may not be comprehensive, it may be time to reach for Lonely Planet to finish it up.

From CJ's list, Queen's Park is the easiest to find if you're on Sukhumvit anyway, just go to Phrom Phong station on the skytrain.  The park is right next to Emporium.  It's not terribly big but has a nice lake in the center and is relatively relaxing.

If you want very small but green, go to the Jim Thompson house, it's on a small soi just across from National Stadium.  It's like walking into the jungle in the heart of the city.  I think that you can wander the grounds freely without paying admission, but you must pay for a tour or to enter the house at all.

If you don't mind a further trip and want to spend the day, then may I suggest Muang Boran, the Ancient city.  It's way out on Sukhumvit road, about 30 minutes to an hour outside of the city, depending on traffic.  Probably can take a taxi there for less than 500 baht.  It's a very large park with lots of greenery and places for picnics.  You can buy some foods on the grounds.  There is a replica of the floating market there with several restaurants.  Also a lot of other famous architecture from across Thailand all done in 1/3 scale.  Even a herd or two of Thai deer wandering the grounds.

A hidden secret at Chathuchak Park is the Thai Railway Museum.  If you like trains or history, it is a great little museum and it is free!!!!

The Queen's Park next to Emporium is a very nice one. In one smallish area, you can see every afternoon these three-men teams playing that Thai sport with the small ball over a sort of voley-ball net. Some other times you can spot a nice lady-farang or even a Thai cutie jogging after 5pm and, some other times, you can see a couple of recent-married couples (all well dressed up) having a photograh session throughout the best views of the park.....Good place to take a beer and make a round in peace.......

Hmmm Jim Thompson house opposite to MBK is also a good palce for a coffe in a peaceful environment. Ah! Lumpini is fine as well although I've only been there when a friend gives me a ride. Do preffer the Queen's park to relax a bit. CHEERS!!!!
