Hello Chaps, A friend of mine recently returned from a 2 week holiday in los, and has now caught the travel bug. He is proposing to me the idea of relocating to bangkok. He is very serious about doing this. Below I have outlined are current position and situation, to give you guys as much detail as possible, to be able to advise how viable a plan like this is, & the likleyhood of it to potentially become a reality. I've gone into a fair bit of detail, and been thorough, so please stay with me while I explain all this to you, and hopefully you can advise lol. _______ Currently we are both in basic "middle of the road" office jobs here in the UK. We have both done some soul searching and decided that diving and teaching jobs, that may be more widely available, just arn't our forte. They wouldn't be something that we would be interested in doing on any basis, as we are not suited to these job roles. That aside, we would be looking for a job, the expectation would hopefully be realistic, an ideal salary between 30-40k or above. We would also accept the fact that is would be the ideal, and we may have to go lower, into the twenties. We would look to set ourselves up over there in Bangkok first of all, get an apartment, start drastically budgeting, separating needs and wants, in a disciplined way. To keep us afloat, we would have a couple of thousand pounds or more, in savings that we would bring over from the UK to pay the basics. The intention would be to search for jobs monday-friday, and party at the weekend, having budgeted the bills well during the week. While unemployed we would be keeping tabs on all matters of spending, entertainment or not, to understand our daily, weekly and monthly spending budgets. We centainly are under no illusions, and would not be living like tourists, budgeting tightly in the week, and having just enough for the weekend. Our calculations would cover us for a 3 month stay, by that time our cash would be running low. The hope would be that we will have landed a job within that 3 month window. If for a reason we didn't, dependent on circumstances, we may possibly extend our stay, but probably most likley we wouldn't, and would call it quits, glad to have had a few months in Los, away from the UK. We've already been searching the internet for jobs, still trying to grasp an understanding of the market. The reality is that our current corporate roles are a mix of general administration, telephone work, with some analytical elements, full use of microsft packages. So on that basis we understand that, we are not so likley to get employed by a big multi-national company, doing some big corporate role for a high salary. We are educated to a higher eduction level, however we do not hold bachelor degree's, as so many of the postings ask for. Although I beleive that this is only applicable to Thai Nationals. Some of the jobs we would be happy to do is, secretary, sales, relationship manager, bank work etc etc, anything that is available, dosn't have to even be office work, but as mentioned previously diving and teaching are not on the menu. Of course, we will do everything in power to find contacts/work before we come over. However if that does not work out, then the plan would be to come over for the 3 months and start the search. On the basis that we get jobs 20-40k a month, we still realize that, the salary will only just cover all of our living expenses, not any additional entertainment. We would use our savings for that, but it would mean that with a job, we could make those savings last longer, and could end up staying in bangkok 6 months, a year or more, depending on circumstances, and additional finances. Which we would be happy with as it would be a nice experience, to work and live in Bangkok for a while So the questions that I ask you are: Aside from the work permits/visa's and everything else that we would have to sort out, how viable is this plan? With a strong work ethic, getting up every morning on skytrain and going to physically look for jobs, can this be done in 3 months? Whether in small numbers or not, are these types of jobs available & attainable, if not what is? I'm going to pm Local Yokul about this, see if he has any advice he can give, as I beleive he is based in Bangkok for a fair while, and may or may not, be able to advise. If any board members think that they can help or advise on this and wanna pm please do, otherwise, your posted opinions will be very helpful We just want to get out and experience. I want to know how do-able this is Thanks

I cannot recommend looking for a job on the ground in BKK unless you stay completely AWAY from Suk. Rd. & all the whores there are some guys where who have done it, & one of the first steps was moving away from Suk. Rd. if you don't have a skill you can sell yourself on that a Thai cannot do, then you better settle for teaching it's getting tougher year-by-year to get a decent-paying expat job in LOS for a couple of reasons : 1. Every Tom & Hairy Dick suddenly found out the truth about Thailand visa the internet or whatever media & are now planning the exact same thing you are 2. the powers-that-be are determining more & more jobs "nationalized" meaning a foreigner can't do them

30k/month office job is what the English-speaking administrative assistants (formerly known as Secretaries) get paid where I work & yes, the labor office has determined by nation how much income you must have to obtain a work permit & maintain yourself in LOS w/o being a mooching cretin last time I checked for Japs it was 90k & Bangladeshi & Indians were 14k don't forget, this is MINIMUM to obtain a W/P there are some exceptions, like teaching, since they know teachers get paid shite even the English teacher market is being flooded with cheaper PI teachers yes, they are not Native speakers, but close enough when their wages cost half as much if you have your fun on Suk, keep your mouth shut about it at work, even if your co-workers hint that they dabble in P4P I worked in BKK for 6 months & never uttered a WORD about it & would only sit & smile sheepishly when the others talked about it to this day my former co-workers think I was an upstanding citizen & would be shocked to hear of some of the decadence levels I've attained, LOL read the fine print of those jobs advertised at 30k, I bet it says Thai national ONLY & if it doesn't it means they didn't think any expat would even think to apply nor consider hiring one this is all JMHO opinion of course

So what if we only want our 30/40 k a month salary, and we are happy and are willing to do anything (execpt teaching) to do this. Unlimited drive and willpower, get up everyday 5 days a week, and go round the city looking for jobs, while applying online as well How would this fair? your right alot of jobs that we are seeing are not specifing thai national, while a good few are, so i'm assuming its ok to apply

BD5, I have posted a couple times on other threads in "Living Here" about my experience and keep my mind my story took place from '02 to '05...... I moved to BKK at 30 years old (on a whim) after selling a small business I owned in America...as you, I had some money in the bank...I got a job teaching at a private school and had a blast.....made some friends, some great memories and best of all met mrs atl.... While I was teaching I sent my CV out to almost every decent looking sales/marketing/business (my background) classified ad in the BKK Post and Nation and kept my eye on job finding websites (cant recall the Thai based one) About a year after my search began (some months more diligent than others) and after many interviews and some rejections (if the job sounded good, I would show up even when it said "Thai National") via a contact I made that initially turned me down (didnt want a farang but met with me anyway) got a job selling condo's which was cool at the time.... which reminds me, if you get rejected (ie thai national only) or the job doesnt seem like a good fit, dont forget to ask if they have any "advice or suggestions that might be beneficial to your job search"..assuming you made a good impression with them.. While at the real estate job, I had joined a couple networking associations and met a Sr. Manager of a company and was offered a position as Director of Sales Southern Thailand (based in Phuket) for that company.. Both non- teaching gigs paid anywhere between 65 and 90K a month depending on commissions..with a base just above what I made teaching..so my "nut" was covered (rent, food, bills, transportation, etc) and I used the commissions for fun, travel, and extra's..... As for a work visa...both non teaching gigs I had supplied them, and they were approved to hire a farang as they proved to the Ministry of Labor that a westerner was essential to their business....I dont know for certain about that 50K minimum thing but had heard about it..... as for teaching (I know nothing about diving lol) if it is still the same as it was back then forget about making decent money teaching without (at least) a Bachelor's degree.....that is pretty certain.... Are there still "Boiler Room" operations in BKK? They were around back in the day and try to disguise their job ad's but could be smelled as soon as you walked into the office for the interview...my advice is run away I believe anything is possible when you set your mind to it, although a related background/education was critical in my case.... not to bum you out with this, just passing my experience along....and things may have changed in the past 3 to 4 years..mai loo?????? All the best! atl *edit in* I am sure there are interesting stories about how some local bro's ended up working in BKK.....in general terms of course.....
