Mr Dave
It is wise - or foolish - to attempt to bring
a bicycle into Thailand?

I just retired and am moving to Thailand soon.
Yes, I've been before.
Don't have a Thai wife, just a one-year, multi-entry visa - so every 90 days...you know the routine.

I have an unusual bicycle, recumbent (BikeE brand). Want to bring it along for early morning rides in the cool dawn. But some questions...

1.) Will customs charge a lot to bring it in?
Officially, I'm just a tourist.

2.) Is it likely to be stolen at the first
opportunity?

3.) Will local police come looking for a handout
from the farang on a bicycle?

Your thoughts please.

1) No...My friends brought bikes in with no problem, especially as a tourist, as far as they are concerned you'll be taking it out soon. Why tell them different.

2) No

3) I doubt it...but local to where?

1. There are no cool dawns.

2. Thai's are generally too lazy to bike it or walk it so I doubt they will steal your bike especially since it cannot be sold.

3. If you plan to stay in the BKK area good luck on the road conditions for riding a bike, in fact may I take out an insurance policy in your name? You probably will not last until the end of your VISA. Countryside is much better.

4. You will probably get more looks from the local police as a freak in a circus. A farang on a bike is a rare site and on a recumbent bike is just strange.

Come on guys, leave the guy alone.

If he wants to bring his bicycle to Thailand and ride it around, so be it. If that's what he likes, who should we be to flame him for it?

I used to like to sit around and consume mass quantities of beer. No one seemed to have a problem with that? No one seems to have a problem with guys that like to sit in Go Go Bars and watch naked girls until the wee hours of the morning? What's so wrong with riding a bicycle?

This is this guys bag, let him have it. Don't flame him for it.

Cheers,

Krypto

NM a recumbent bike is a type where your ass is practically on the ground and your legs are level. It works a different group of leg muscles.

The problem is you head is below window level of cars, so when Kypto is downing Changs and chucking the empties he will likely hit poor Mr. Dave in the head and not know it.

Mr. Dave I would wear a good helmet and beware of flying Chang bottles and coconut husks.

Better to join a gym here that has the bikes.

I will keep a look out for that bike squashed up between a bus and a little yellow taxi then. jesus, I remember a thread where guys were talking about extreme adventure, diving, parachuting etc etc, not very extreme in reality, but riding a watchamacallit bike around Bkk, sh*t now that would be extreme in my books, lol, good luck my friend, by the way, they may charge you a high tax upon entry, cos they know you wont be taking it out again.

I see approximately 10 - 20 bicycle riders per day on my way to the office here in Chonburi. I agree, it would not be safe in Bangkok. But if he is living in a place such as Chaing Mai, Chonburi, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket and other not so populated areas it should be just fine for him.

Hey buddy, hang in there. Bring the bike, you will love riding it here if that's what you like. Just stay out of Bangkok, or like some have said, your retirement might be short.

Cheers,

Krypto
