Hi Guys I have a mate "stranded" (allegedly) in BKK. Usual story, went for 2 weeks, met a girl!! Three months later he can't get out becuase the idiot let his via expire. He is now claiming the Thai authorities will not let him on a plane because of this and that he needs 18,000 to buy a visa extension from the UK Embassy. Trouble is the guy is an habitual liar and tends to use things like this to extort money from his "Old mum". Questions are these:- 1. What IS the best thing thing to do when a visa is expired (he has overstayed about 3 months) and what are the likley consequences of him doing this. 2. Is it the UK embassy he would deal with (if not then we know he is lying) 3. Would it be 18,000 to pay the UK embassy to sort this out? Both his mum and I want to help him if he is being genuine - but to me it just doesn't ring true as I would not expect it to be a British Embassy matter but one for the THAI authorities. Comments or experiences REALLY appreciated - thanks

Not a UK problem unless the guy ends up in Jail in which case he might get some visits from the Embassy! The money will have to be paid to the Thai authorities I think at the Airport. No pay and he will stay might do him some good to spend a little time confined at the Immigration Police's Hotel!

whitespider: Sorry. Can't help you because I don't have any information/knowledge on immigration issues pertaining to UK citizenship. But, I will say as terrible as it might sound, I agree with Oldhand. ƯA couple nights in the Immigration Police "hotel" might do this guy some good. I had a friend who could dissappear for months upon end in Thailand only to surface to ask for money. IMO: A couple of restless nights would've done him some good!! Good luck with your friend.

Definately nothing to do with the UK embassy. They do not issue visas for people to come to thailand as i think we all know. Visa overstays are payable at the airport with a fine, the amount I cannot remember 200B a day springs to mind. If he is under 15 it's free!! (I doubt). His only problem at this time is to get stopped on the street with a visa overstay...then he would be jailed, but if it is only revealed at the airport and he is leaving the fine will suffice. If his initial visa was for one month (on arrival) and he is 90 days over that is about 18,000B so that maybe what he is asking for. Truly a silly boy, and not a very good liar!

The fine for being in the country without a visa is currently 200 Baht a day up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht. Imprisonment until the fine is paid is normal and the police routinely stop foreigners and ask to see their passport which they are obliged to carry with them at all times by law. Normally showing a clear photocopy and explaining where they can inspect the original passport will satisfy them.

Most of the "jail" stories I have heard is that the UK, Aussie, AND US embassy are of very LITTLE help. Hope that helps.

thanks for the info, Yurune! it semed to be a wise thing to do, carrying your passport or perhaps a photocopied one with u at all times. there was an incident when we ( ccvvbb, BigD or was it other members from the Jan RT) were stopped at a police road block to produce our passports. well. none of us had it and we could only produce our IDs. not too good, the over-all-in -charge guy werent very please with 3 IDs from different countries!! a bit of lecture....blah..blah...blah.... and a gentle reminder later, we were back in the cab on our way to Orbit!! just one question, "a photocopied" of the passport, does it mean my particulars or its just the immgration chop stating my date of arrival (i think its this one) or both?? better be safe than sorry, i mean i don wanna be stopped again and then gothru the hassle of going back to the hotel to produce my passport and miss out a nites' fun!! (yup, i guess i still wont be doing it) regards, chrisboy

As far as the photocopies go....copy your details....your visa and make sure the number on your immigration card is visible too. Not of much use to them on a general ID stop, but I have heard of problems (urban myths maybe) if it cannot be seen. I also carry photocopies of my work permit as well...mainly cos the picture is real cute...LOL. Good decision to leave him to it....She'll get hold of what little cash he has left and it hopefully will be a lesson well learned!!!

200 bt a day is the rate in any case, although they do give you 1 days grace, if its well overstayed, usually 10,000bt gets it all done - if your are detained, in this case its at the holding cells in soi suan pluu, much better than in normal thai jails .... how do I know that ? - dont ask !
