Sorry, most American food in Bangkok is crap. Probably the same as the States but still crap compared to Thai food or Asian food in general.

A friend of mine once took 2 American clients out to dinner in Bangkok.
It was their first time in Asia and they were from Ohio or somewhere, very straitlaced Christian gentlemen.
He took them to the Irish Exchange for a bite to eat before hitting the go-gos.
One of the Americans exclaimed, "Good God, there is a woman drinking beer over there."
Apparently he had an issue with women who drank, smoke, got tattoos and otherwise behaved in loose ways which were sinful and an affront to God.
My mate called off the trip to the balloon show.
I can only suggest to you NBIB that you leave your "prejudices" and preconceptions at home and just get down and dirty. Eat the local food, drink beer and hang out. Bangkok is a very easy city to move aroud, have a good time and do something different.

I don't believe one word of that story. You obviously don’t know anything about the US. There is more debauchery in America than Thailand, by a long shot.
The only problem is the American debauchery does not include a GFE (even when advertised) and is very expensive relative to BKK.

solly, but I don't get something here...
Maybe there is more debauchery in the US compared to LOS, maybe there isn't. Maybe it's due to the sheer size of the population there compared to LOS, maybe it isn't.
But does it mean that there aren't bound to be people like those 'straitlaced Christian gentlemen' around, even in countries that have 'more debauchery'? Are you also implying that people in the US are so immune/used to the debauchery there that no such people like those two men exist, or should exist?

That story, passed on from one person to another, is pure folklore. Just one of the many pieces of folklore about the US. The idea that anyone in the US (much less someone who has traveled halfway around the world) would be upset at seeing a women drinking alcohol in a bar is pure fiction. How many times do you thing he saw someone drinking on the airplane?
There may be people in the US who don't drink, or don't think that anyone else shold drink, but America is about the freedom to choose, and drinking alchohol is legal is all 50 US states (although in a very few places you have to pay $1 to join a "private club").
I don't want to get into a flame war about why drugs are illegal in the US, but that is not exactly unique to America.

Well Mr A,
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story" is a motto of my dear old grandfather who at 93 can still tell some highly entertaining whoppers.
As to checking the facts, well my mate has been dead for a few years now but a medium may be helpful.
As far as I can remember there were indeed two Americans and they were from a highly moralistic part of the States, I said Ohio but it could have been Utah, Montana or god knows where. He was operating the Thai subsidiary of a renownedly conservative American corporation.
I recall the American in general was shocked by a woman drinking beer, specifically beer, as if it was a low down place where righteous people would not wish to be seen. I doubt that a lady with a glass of cream sheery would have drawn comment. No, it was definitely because it was beer, probably a pint of Guinness.
The moral of the story, all good stories have a moral, is not to bring your prejudices along on a trip as they may well seem very quaint and even a touch pathetic.
Trust this clears the matter up.
